This week’s neglected book

Books from the Backlog #166The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich

A thrilling YA debut about teen spies disguised as "love interests"--whoever gets the girl lives; but the one she rejects, dies.

There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.

Caden is a Nice: The boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection.
Dylan is a Bad: The brooding, dark-souled guy, and dangerously handsome.

The girl they are competing for is important to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose a Nice or the Bad?

Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be - whoever the girl doesn't choose will die.

What the boys don't expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.

From debut author Cale Dietrich comes a fast-paced adventure that is full of both action and romance and subverts common tropes.

Why did I add The Love Interest to my bookshelf?

I have had this book on my shelf since 2017. When I saw it offered as a selection for Book of the Month, I loved the sound of it and added it to my box right away. The reviews have been pretty mixed so I am less confident about the book than I was when I added it to my shelf but I think it would be worth a try anyway.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. I remember hearing good things about this book. I have his co-write coming up and am excited to sample his work.

  2. I hope you enjoy it! Sometimes the reactions of others to books confuse us, and we set books aside. That happens quite a bit.

    Thanks for sharing.

  3. I remember this one. It sure caught my attention when I saw it in someone’s post. Mixed review books sometimes take a little extra effort for me to give them a try.

  4. I remember seeing this a lot when it first came out. I probably never got convinced to try it out. Hope you enjoy it when you do get around it, Carole.
