This week’s neglected book

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

Why did I add The Night Circus to my bookshelf?

I bought a copy of this audiobook 8 years ago. I also have a print copy sitting on my shelf. I have no idea why I haven’t picked it up just yet. It seems that most of my Goodreads friends loved it and a much smaller percentage didn’t care for it. So I will probably either love it…or I won’t. Either way, I should probably try it so I can mark it off my tbr list.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it?

  1. Oh nice! I have seen this one around quite a bit. For some reason I could never decide if it was for me or not. Something always held me back even after my love of Caraval! I hope you get to read it soon! Maybe your review will be the one to change my mind!

  2. Great selection, Carole! This one has been sitting on my shelf for ages as well and I still haven’t picked it up. I’ve heard the audiobook is the way to go with this one. Happy reading!

  3. My sister in law loved this book so much and insisted I read it. LOL, I still have it sitting on my list just waiting. Hope you love it, Carole!

  4. I just recently re-read this one for a readalong! I enjoyed it, but at least one of the people I was reading it with did not. It does seem to be a polarizing book. I suspect trying to avoid any hype or expectations about the book will give you the best shot at enjoying it. I remember the hype around this book giving me the completely wrong impression for what the book was actually like.

  5. Haven’t read or heard about that one…and not particular drawn to circus fic…but thanks for sharing…enjoy your reading adventure.
