Now that Texas has seceded and the world is spiraling into chaos, good guys come in unlikely packages and love sprouts in the most inconvenient places...

Heron Farad should be dead. But technology has made him the man he is today. Now he heads a crew of uniquely skilled outsiders who fight to salvage what's left of humanity: art, artifacts, books, ideas-sometimes even people. People like Mari Vallejo.

Mari has been lusting after her mysterious handler for months. But when a by-the-book hit goes horribly sideways, she and Heron land on the universal most wanted list. Someone set them up. Desperate and on the run, they must trust each other to survive, while hiding devastating secrets. As their explosive chemistry heats up, it's the perfect storm...

I ended up liking this book quite a bit. I was actually surprised just how much I did like it. Once I started reading, I was somewhat mesmerized by this futuristic world. I thought that it was a little different than the books that I usually pick up and I found myself enjoying the originality. I am so glad that I finally decided to pick up this entertaining read.

This book opens with a bang. Quite literally. Mari is sent to do a job and things go horribly wrong. Before she knows it, she is on the run with her handler, Heron. It quickly becomes apparent that Heron is more than he appears to be on the surface. I really liked Mari and Heron and thought that the chemistry between them was very well done. I loved the fact that there were a few surprises in the book that I did not see coming which kept things very interesting.

Johanna Parker did a wonderful job with the narration. I have had a lot of luck with this narrator in the past and she did not disappoint. I liked the various voices that she used and I thought that she added a lot of excitement and emotion to the story. She has a very pleasant voice and I feel that her narration added to y overall enjoyment of the story.

I would recommend this book to others. This book had a lot of things going for it with its futuristic setting, great characters, a lot of action, and a swoon-worthy romance. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

I received this book for free from the publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Kellen Hockley usually keeps quiet about his past, but once upon a time he loved a girl named Angela. He hasn't seen her in a decade, but now he has to break the news to her that his team of rogue treasure hunters accidentally killed her husband. He's had better days...

It's not the news that's delivered to Angela Neko that breaks her apart—it's the rumbly, Texas drawl delivering it. She can't believe she's hearing Kellen's voice again. But there's no time for distractions. When Angela's own life is threatened, yielding up all of her lies and secrets, she and Kellen must figure out how to reverse the geopolitical firestorm she lit to save the world, to save Kellen's cat...and just maybe to save each other.

I liked this book. I didn’t like it quite as much as the first book in the series but it was an enjoyable enough listen. This book could be read as a stand-alone novel since it follows a different couple than the first book but I would recommend reading the series in order if at all possible since events from the first book are discussed in this one.

Kellen and Angela were an item when they were younger but they haven’t seen each other for years. Angela’s husband has been killed and she needs to convince the world that it was his clone and not him. Before she knows it she is in more danger and needs Kellen’s help. I liked the futuristic world that the story was set in and I really liked the fact that the characters had a lot of history with each other. Kellen and Angela obviously had a lot of feelings for each other still but there was also a lot of pain in their past. There was plenty of action to keep the story moving.

I thought that Johanna Parker did a great job with the narration. I liked the way that she was able to bring the characters to life. I thought that her narration added a lot of emotion and excitement to the story. I believe that her narration added to my overall enjoyment of the story.

I would recommend this book to others. I thought that the futuristic setting was very well done and the story had plenty of excitement to keep things interesting.

I received a digital review copy of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via NetGalley.

  1. This sounds like a promising series. I hadn’t heard of it before. But I am definitely interested, especially given the futuristic setting. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this one!

  2. Sounds like and fun and original concept. Glad to hear the narration was really good, too! Too bad the second book was as good as the first.
