This week’s neglected book

Jonathan Unleashed by Meg Rosoff

Publication Date: July 5, 2016
Publisher: Viking

National Book Award finalist and bestselling author Meg Rosoff’s charming, hilarious new novel about a young New Yorker’s search for happiness and the two dogs who help him find it—the perfect summer read

Jonathan Trefoil’s boss is unhinged, his relationship baffling, and his apartment just the wrong side of legal. His girlfriend wants to marry someone just like him—only richer and with a different sense of humor. He doesn’t remember life being this confusing, back before everyone expected him to act like a grown-up.

When his brother asks him to look after his dogs, Jonathan’s world view begins to shift. Could a border collie and a cocker spaniel hold the key to life, the universe, and everything? Their sly maneuvering on daily walks and visits to the alluring vet suggest that human emotional intelligence may not be top dog after all.

A funny, wise romantic comedy set in Manhattan, Jonathan Unleashed is a story of tangled relationships, friendships, and dogs. Rosoff’s novel is for anyone wondering what to be when they grow up, and how on earth to get there.

Why did I add Jonathan Unleashed to my bookshelf?

I won a copy of Jonathan Unleashed from a giveaway over at Bea’s Book Nook in the summer of 2016 and I remember being very excited to get a copy.  I have no idea why I have let this book sit on my bookshelf for over 2 years.  I am kind of a dog nut so the cover alone is enough to make me want to read this book but it is also described as a humorous story which is also appealing.  It is a pretty short book so maybe I can work it in soon now that I have rediscovered it.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. I haven't heard of this one, but I love how the leashes connect to the words! I really love how simple the cover is, too. It sounds like it might make a good wintery read, so hopefully you'll have a chance to read it soon. 🙂

  2. I had this one on my TBR too. It sounds adorable. I have no idea why the GR's rating is so low. Sounds like people loved it or hated it, but I would be ok with the things they took issue with.

  3. I've actually read this one and found it to be pretty good. It wasn't great but it was entertaining. The pups are SUPER cute in it.

  4. Um I'm totally confused the blurb is just like My Kind of Wonderful by Jill Shalvis. The blurb I see for this on Goodreads has some things in common with Mutts & Mistletoe I just read. Where dogs make people realize what's important in life. Anne – Books of My Heart

  5. I'm the say way: I get super excited for a book, and then when I get my hands on it, I totally forget about it! It sounds funny though.

  6. I actually also have a book by this author on my shelf for years that I've never read before for some reason! This post actually just reminded me of it… we both need to get to ours soon D:
