A woman discovers that not all monsters are her enemy—the opposite, in fact—in this new paranormal romance by Lana Ferguson, author of The Fake Mate.
Keyanna “Key” MacKay is used to secrets. Raised by a single father who never divulged his past, it’s only after his death that she finds herself thrust into the world he’d always refused to speak of. With just a childhood bedtime story about a monster that saved her father’s life and the name of her estranged grandmother to go off of, Key has no idea what she’ll find in Scotland. But repeating her father’s mistakes and being rescued by a gorgeous, angry Scotsman—who thinks she’s an idiot—is definitely the last thing she expects.
Lachlan Greer has his own secrets to keep, especially from the bonnie lass he pulls to safety from the slippery shore—a lass with captivating eyes and the last name he’s been taught not to trust. He’s looking for answers as well, and Key’s presence on the grounds they both now occupy presents a real problem. It’s even more troublesome when he gets a front row seat to the lukewarm welcome Key receives from her family; the strange powers she begins to develop; and the fierce determination she brings to every obstacle in her path. Things he shouldn’t care about, and someone he definitely doesn’t find wildly attractive.
When their secrets collide, it becomes clear that Lachlan could hold the answers Keyanna is after—and that she might also be the key to uncovering his. Up against time, mystery, and a centuries old curse, they’ll quickly discover that magic might not only be in fairy tales, and that love can be a real loch-mess.
This was fun! I have read a lot of paranormal romances and consider myself a pretty big fan, but this is the first time I have encountered one featuring the Loch Ness Monster as the Hero. Lachlan and Key were both fantastic characters and I wanted to see things work out for them as they worked together to discover secrets from their pasts.
Key has never met her grandparents, so she travels to Scotland to do just that after her father’s death. It is immediately apparent that her work is cut out for her because the reception she receives is less than warm. Lachlan is right there to see it all. At first, these two are not big fans of one another but as they spend time together the chemistry between them heats up and they become quite the formidable pair. I couldn’t wait to see how they would unravel the curse that has touched both of their lives.
Samantha Summers and Flint Park did an amazing job with the narration of this audiobook. I was especially taken with Flint Park’s Scottish accent and thought that it really helped to set the location of the story. Both narrators had very pleasant voices which complimented each other well. I enjoyed the duet narration and thought it made the book more enjoyable. I definitely feel like this book is meant to be listened to.
I would recommend this book to others. I thought this was a fun romance with great characters, plenty of chemistry, great banter, and a bit of magic. I can’t wait to read more of Lana Ferguson’s work.
I received a review copy of this book from Penguin Random House Audio.
I’ve seen many good reviews for this author but haven’t read her work yet.
I also was rooting for this couple. They were great together, and I really wanted Key to finally get that connection she yearned for. This may be my favorite by the author.
