This week’s neglected book

A Desperate Fortune by Susanna Kearsley

Publication Date: April 7, 2015

Publisher: Sourcebooks Landmark

The highly anticipated, brand-new timeslip romance from New York Times bestselling author Susanna Kearsley

For nearly 300 years, the mysterious journal of Jacobite exile Mary Dundas has lain unread-its secrets safe from prying eyes. Now, amateur codebreaker Sara Thomas has been hired by a once-famous historian to crack the journal’s cipher.

But when she arrives in Paris, Sara finds herself besieged by complications from all sides: the journal’s reclusive owner, her charming Parisian neighbor, and Mary, whose journal doesn’t hold the secrets Sara expects. As Mary’s tale grows more and more dire, Sara, too, must carefully choose which turning to take… to find the road that will lead her safely home.

Why did I add A Desperate Fortune to my bookshelf?
This a book from my NetGalley shelf that is just a few years old.  I think that I wished for the book and gave up on it when the publication date came and went.  I got a big surprise in November 2015 when I received an email that my wish was granted and I could download the book.  I think that the book sounds great but my reading schedule was full at the time that this book made a surprise appearance in my review queue.  I recently added the audiobook to my library so I think I will be able to fit this one in soon.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. Those "wishes" make me nuts. They always "grant" them to me so late, that I have a million books to read, and have no time for this book I never thought I would get. But, there is something to be said about those timeslip romances.

  2. It does sound tempting. I'm very curious about what the journal will reveal. And now I don't feel so bad about my Netgalley list. I have some older downloads that need attention too.

  3. I enjoyed this one, especially the historical storyline. Isn't that a drag to get approved so long after you anticipated that you filled in the reading spots? I've had that happen a few times with NG. Hope you enjoy it and the audio version.

  4. I've seen this one a lot lately. I was thinking it was a new book. Maybe she just published some other books recently. Anne – Books of My Heart

  5. I have not read this book, but I've heard great things about the author. I can't wait to read your thoughts, as I've yet to try anything from her. 🙂

  6. I was just telling someone on my post that I still have two books on my Netgalley inactive shelf from 2015 that were never approved or denied. Ha ha. ?

I My goal this year was to clear all of my back Netgalley ARCs and hit 100%, but I didn't make it. I did put a good-sized dent in them, though, so I think I might be able to do it next year. ?✨

  7. I haven't heard of this one, but now I want to know what's in the book! What secrets needed to stay buried for hundreds of years? Why? And if the book has a current owner, why are people trying to decipher it? Interesting synopsis! I hope you enjoy it!

  8. This is a cool feature. I've found all the books that I was supposed to read on NetGalley that I can get through the library. I want to read through them over the next two years hopefully. I've noticed that I'm really interested in only two of the books which sucks. Are you planning on reading A Desperate Fortune soon?
