This week’s neglected book

My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga

Publication Date: February 10, 2015

Publisher: Balzer + Bray

Sixteen-year-old physics nerd Aysel is obsessed with plotting her own death. With a mother who can barely look at her without wincing, classmates who whisper behind her back, and a father whose violent crime rocked her small town, Aysel is ready to turn her potential energy into nothingness.

There’s only one problem: she’s not sure she has the courage to do it alone. But once she discovers a website with a section called Suicide Partners, Aysel’s convinced she’s found her solution: a teen boy with the username FrozenRobot (aka Roman) who’s haunted by a family tragedy is looking for a partner.

Even though Aysel and Roman have nothing in common, they slowly start to fill in each other’s broken lives. But as their suicide pact becomes more concrete, Aysel begins to question whether she really wants to go through with it. Ultimately, she must choose between wanting to die or trying to convince Roman to live so they can discover the potential of their energy together. Except that Roman may not be so easy to convince.

Why did I add My Heart and Other Dark Holes to my bookshelf?
One of the things that I am really enjoying about this weekly post is the fact that it forces me to take a good look at the books that I already have on my shelf.  I am finding some books that I had no memory of ever acquiring which would be the case with this book.  I was pretty shocked to see it on my shelf and wonder how long it has been there.  I have a feeling that my daughter is probably responsible for bringing this one into our collection but I think it sounds like it is worth a try.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. I think I read this the same year it came out because it was the time when a lot of suicide books came out (i think?) and I was intrigued by the idea. It turned out being an 'okay' read for me though. There were things that I didn't like but maybe that was just me because I know some people who actually love this 🙂

  2. I find that too…I'm prowling through my tbr trying to decide on upcoming reads and then I find something I don't remember getting. I suppose with a tbr my size it isn't a big surprise!

  3. So, we both have this on our backlog. I really want to make a push for this for myself, because I have heard really great things about it, and am always looking for more mental-health-done-right books, which I heard this is.

  4. Your weekly meme is doing the same for me. All sorts of treasures on the shelves, it seems. Wow, this one does sound interesting with the partnership. I'm interested now, too.

  5. I've been caught by surprise from books I added to my TBR too. Some I plan to try and some I've deleted as I have no idea why I added them and they don't really appeal to me. The mystery…………… LOL

  6. I still download the freebies but I scrutinize the Goodreads ratings and reviews. I'm sorry but this one doesn't speak to me at all. Good luck with it. Anne – Books of My Heart

  7. This is one also on my backlog! I fell in love with the title when I first heard it and bought it back when it was a new release. I really really want to read it soon though. Hopefully we can both get around to it!
