This week’s neglected book

Underwater by Marisa Reichardt

Publication Date: January 12, 2016
Publisher: Farrar, Straus, & Giroux

“Forgiving you will allow me to forgive myself.”

Morgan didn’t mean to do anything wrong that day. Actually, she meant to do something right. But her kind act inadvertently played a role in a deadly tragedy. In order to move on, Morgan must learn to forgive—first someone who did something that might be unforgivable, and then herself.

But Morgan can’t move on. She can’t even move beyond the front door of the apartment she shares with her mother and little brother. Morgan feels like she’s underwater, unable to surface. Unable to see her friends. Unable to go to school.

When it seems Morgan can’t hold her breath any longer, a new boy moves in next door. Evan reminds her of the salty ocean air and the rush she used to get from swimming. He might be just what she needs to help her reconnect with the world outside.

Why did I add Underwater to my bookshelf?
I was really excited when I won a copy of this book right around its publication date.  I do like to see mental illness represented in books and I think it is especially important in book geared towards young adults.  Most of my friends on Goodreads have liked this book and it is relatively short at only 288 pages so I really have no excuses for not reading this one yet.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. I agree about it being neat that the book spotlights mental health issues. Hope you get the chance to pick it up soon. 🙂

  2. I do remember wanting to read this and then not getting to it. I still would like to. I hope you don't mind if I leave my link here in the comments. The linky is still only showing that is loading for me even after clearing my cookies and cache. I'll try to visit other posts from their comments if I don't already follow them.

  3. Oh interesting! I love that it's a book geared towards YA that really seems to deal with mental health. We definitely need more of that.

  4. I've seen this book before and for some reason I thought it was from 2012 but it is from 2016!? I don't really tend to like books where boys save the girl which is where this book seems to be going but I may be wrong. It's pretty short so you can always try a chapter to see if you like it (:

  5. I remember when this one came out and it got a lot of positive reviews! I am curious to know more about it again after seeing this post as a reminder ^.^
