Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
Publication Date: February 3, 2009
Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf
A sweeping, emotionally riveting first novel—an enthralling family saga of Africa and America, doctors and patients, exile and home.
Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon at a mission hospital in Addis Ababa. Orphaned by their mother’s death in childbirth and their father’s disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Yet it will be love, not politics—their passion for the same woman—that will tear them apart and force Marion, fresh out of medical school, to flee his homeland. He makes his way to America, finding refuge in his work as an intern at an underfunded, overcrowded New York City hospital. When the past catches up to him—nearly destroying him—Marion must entrust his life to the two men he thought he trusted least in the world: the surgeon father who abandoned him and the brother who betrayed him.
An unforgettable journey into one man’s remarkable life, and an epic story about the power, intimacy, and curious beauty of the work of healing others.

I used to read a lot of non fiction about the life of people in Africa and Asia but not as much fiction. I have heard of this book but never read it.
so it's a relationship family kind of story or did he do something really bad?
This really sounds intense. I hope you enjoy it when you do find time.
I started listening to this a few years ago, but never finished it. Even though I liked the narrator, it was such a slow going book. And while I generally don't mind long books, I don't do well with long audiobooks. This is one I have in print also, so maybe someday I'll go back and try reading that copy. Or maybe I'll try again with the audio. I hope you do like it when you get to it, Carole. Enjoy your Thursday!
Oh my goodness. This sounds SO good and so hard-hitting! I'm going to have to check it out.
Thanks for sharing!
Hope you get to enjoy this one soon!
I looked this up to see if it was non-fiction or historical fiction. It is the latter which makes it harder for me because I always wonder what REALLY happened or if events are accurate. This is the kind of book I might get at the library if I was interested in a particular culture or region but it's not the type of thing I read often.
Anne – Books of My Heart
doesn't sound like one for me, but i hope you enjoy it
sherry @ fundinmental
This has all the makings of a good read and it could also be a good movie.
This one is new to me
Oh my, doesn't that sound familiar about loading up that Kindle when it was shiny new. 🙂
You're right! This does sound like a deeply moving story, Carole.
I haven't read it but I hope you enjoy it when you get around to it.
I have seen it at the library
You should definitely read this soon or at least listen to the audio. I find that I'm able to tackle my old TBR faster with an audio accompaniment.
I bought a lot of books with the Kindle app years ago! Unfortunately, my tastes have changed a lot since then, and I haven't gotten around to reading them. I hope you love this whenever you find the time for it!
Lindsi @ Do You Dog-ear? ?
Hope this one is good when you get to it!
This sounds a little too deep for me, but it's quite a dramatic set up
I haven't read this, but that synopsis has made me want to read it! I'm going to add it to Goodreads. ?✨
