This week’s neglected book

Providence by Caroline Kepnes

Publication Date: June 19, 2018
Publisher: Random House – Lenny

A propulsive new thriller about the obsessive nature of love when an intensifying relationship between best friends is disrupted by a kidnapping.

Growing up as best friends in small-town New Hampshire, Jon and Chloe are the only ones who truly understand each other, though they can never find the words to tell one another the depth of their feelings. When Jon is finally ready to confess his feelings, he’s suddenly kidnapped by his substitute teacher who is obsessed with H.P. Lovecraft and has a plot to save humanity.

Mourning the disappearance of Jon and facing the reality he may never return, Chloe tries to navigate the rites of entering young adulthood and “fit in” with the popular crowd, but thoughts of Jon are never far away.

When Jon finally escapes, he discovers he now has an uncontrollable power that endangers anyone he has intense feelings for. He runs away to protect Chloe and find the answers to his new identity—but he’s soon being tracked by a detective who is fascinated by a series of vigilante killings that appear connected.

Whisking us on a journey through New England and crashing these characters’ lives together in the most unexpected ways, Kepnes explores the complex relationship between love and identity, unrequited passion and obsession, self-preservation and self-destruction, and how the lines are often blurred between the two.

Why did I add Providence to my bookshelf?
I have only had this book for about a year and a half but I can’t believe that I haven’t read it yet. I loved this author’s previous work and even though I know that this book is very different than You or Hidden Bodies, I still think that it is one that I would enjoy.  I won an arc of this book before it was released but I may end up grabbing a copy of the audiobook from my local library just so I can fit it in a bit sooner.
This week’s photo
Molly was the only dog in my house willing to cooperate with getting her picture with this week’s neglected book.  One of my dog’s hides as soon as pictures start being taken.  The puppy is a nut and won’t sit still long enough to get a picture.  It took me the whole week but I was finally able to get Molly to cooperate.  My great idea of having my dogs model the books I use for this feature may be very short lived 🙂

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. Carol I've read this and loved it. I just read YOU and have to admit I liked this one better. I think you should bump it up. And yes, it is hard to get a good pet posed picture! Molly looks great.

  2. love the promo photos with the pups. critters can be difficult when it comes to having their pics taken. 🙂 The book sounds like a good one and i hope you get a chance to read it soon. looks like a good recommendation from barb too.

  3. Molly is a lovely book model. 🙂

LOL, I have ever so many that I would never have believed would sit as long as they do waiting for my attention. 🙂

  4. Oh, man. That picture of Molly reminds me of a dog my family used to own, Jack. It's makes me sad to think about him, but the picture is beautiful!

Unfortunately this book was a DNF for me. I'll be interested to see what you think. You like things that are a bit eccentric and more off the wall than I do, I think. I think you might like this one.

    Thanks for sharing, Carole! 🙂

  5. I didn't love You, but I did watch the series when it came out. I dislike how it differed from the book, because I think they left out some really important aspects of the book. Overall, both were enjoyable! I haven't read any of the author's other books, but they're on my TBR!

  6. My dog makes weird faces when I take his picture. He'll close his eyes or he looks like he's giving me the eye. But I love the thought of staging my dog with a book I'm reviewing. I might have to steal your idea so everyone can see the goofy pictures he takes. lol I love you picture though, how sweet.

  7. Molly is quite the book model! Too funny about the other dogs. In every casual family picture there is always a pet of varying willingness! This sounds like an interesting book and like it could be quite a wild ride.

  8. Good one! I have this on my list for when I have time. I forgot to post today! Molly looks sweet. It's hard to get a picture of my dog too. It's nothing obvious, but I swear he purposely ruins the shots. LOL

  9. This book seems really strange sort of a paranormal young adult mystery? I don't think Lulu would sit still for a photo. I'd have to put her in the crate and lean the book up against it, not good.

  10. I can't get my cats to stay still for pictures very often either, so I can relate. 🙂 I haven't read Providence, but it does sound really good.

  11. I remember seeing this book everywhere last year. I have not read anything by the author, though. I love that your dog is in your bookstagram photos.

  12. I recognised the author but I have never read anything by this author D: I think I should try one of her novels. I hope you enjoy this one whenever you can get around to it!
