This week’s neglected book
Game of Thrones 5 Book Boxed Set (Song of Ice and Fire Series): A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons) by George R.R. Martin

Publication Date: September 10, 2012 (Boxed Set)
Publisher: Bantam

For the first time, all five novels in the epic fantasy series that inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones are together in one eBook bundle. An immersive entertainment experience unlike any other, A Song of Ice and Fire has earned George R. R. Martin—dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine—international acclaim and millions of loyal readers. Now this bundle collects the entire monumental cycle in the most convenient format available:

A GAME OF THRONES
A CLASH OF KINGS
A STORM OF SWORDS
A FEAST OF CROWS
A DANCE WITH DRAGONS

“One of the best series in the history of fantasy.”—Los Angeles Times

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

“Long live George Martin . . . a literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers.”—The New York Times

Why did I add Game of Thrones Boxed Set to my bookshelf?
I bought this box set on Kindle back in November 2013 for only $9.99.  I recognized a good deal when I saw it but I just haven’t ever felt like it was the right time to start reading such a long series.  The series takes some dedication.  I didn’t start watching the show until my surgery this past summer but I have quickly caught up to speed and only have 6 more episodes left to watch.  I have to admit that after watching the show I am even more interested in reading these books.  I am curious about the things they changed and I am sure that the books include a lot of details that the show just doesn’t have time for.  My quest this year to catch up on all of my past due review books is largely fueled by my desire to get to all of these awesome books that are a part of my personal library.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. The first series on HBO is pretty much identical to the first book. It feels comfy to read as you know he events and characters already. There are characters and whole plotlines that were cut by HBO for reasons of time and making the story simpler, and I think there were good choices there. We didn't need to see more claimants for the throne and it cut out the complicated things that are bogging GRRM down at the moment. The good thing is the switching chapters showing what is happening to each main character which moves the story on quicker and it gives insight into each character. I love seeing what Cersei and Jaime are thinking! We get more detail on Robb's war which was fun too!

  2. I'll be grabbing the set. While I'd love to own the print books. it gets pretty pricey. Can't wait for the final season. Then I'll be grabbing the completed video set too.
I couldn't play along this week but I'll be joining in again next week.

    • I got the first seven seasons as a set during Prime Day last year. I like having the books on Kindle because it is easier to read larger books that way. Feel free to join in whenever it works into your schedule.

  3. Well I haven't watched the show or read the books. I did want to watch the show. With this type of long book, I sometimes prefer the audio depending on the narrator. But if I were trying it, I would get it from the library since I don't know if I would like it. Good Luck! Anne – Books of My Heart

  4. Thankfully this isn't my genre because that page count is past terrifying! I'll be interested to hear what you think of it when you get to it!

  5. I watched the first two seasons before we got rid of our cable. I was going to continue watching with DVDs from the library, but I would get home and realize I had forgotten to borrow them. Ha ha. Now it's been so long I need to watch seasons one and two over again. ?

I have the first book on my Kindle and intend to read it this year. My son as read two or three. I would love to be able to discuss them with him. ?✨

  6. I have read the first book and after that watched season one. I absolutely LOVED book one and am hoping to read book 2 over the next two months. I hope you will be able to love these whenever you get around to reading them x

  7. I loved the first book in this series, but haven't managed to read the rest. I enjoyed the first season of the show, but haven't watched the rest–feeling like I should read the rest of the books first. I suppose it doesn't really matter, but I can't convince my brain of that. LOL
