This week’s neglected book

Long Road to Mercy by David Baldacci
Series: Atlee Pine #1
Publication Date: November 13, 2018
 Publisher: Grand Central Publishing

Introducing a remarkable new character from #1 New York Times bestselling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat . . . and an old nightmare.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe.

It’s seared into Atlee Pine’s memory: the kidnapper’s chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.

She never saw Mercy again.

Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She’s the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.

So when one of the Grand Canyon’s mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon-and its rider missing-Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she’s abruptly called off the case.

If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it…

Why did I add Long Road to Mercy to my bookshelf?

I enthusiastically agree to review this book when the publisher offered to send me a copy.  I still think that this is a book that I will really like but it has been sitting on my shelf unread without a review for more than two years.  I noticed that my library has a copy of the audiobook so this might be the year that I finally check this one off of my list.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. oh no…poor mule. i have been to the grand canyon, but never did the mules. very scary trail they take, but the mules just plod along like it's only another day in the park.-)

  2. I can relate to being excited to get a copy of a book for review and then not getting to it right away. Looks like one that will be a wonderful start of series.

  3. Baldacci is one of those authors I've seen others read and enjoy, but I've never actually read any of his books.

  4. I loved, loved, loved this. I've read all 3 in the series. I'm now reading more of his backlist, including the series for the character who shows up in book 3 of this series.
