She’s got his back.
Hannah Brooks looks more like a kindergarten teacher than somebody who could kill you with a wine bottle opener. Or a ballpoint pen. Or a dinner napkin. But the truth is, she’s an Executive Protection Agent (aka "bodyguard"), and she just got hired to protect superstar actor Jack Stapleton from his middle-aged, corgi-breeding stalker. He’s got her heart.
Jack Stapleton’s a household name—captured by paparazzi on beaches the world over, famous for, among other things, rising out of the waves in all manner of clingy board shorts and glistening like a Roman deity. But a few years back, in the wake of a family tragedy, he dropped from the public eye and went off the grid. They’ve got a secret.
When Jack’s mom gets sick, he comes home to the family’s Texas ranch to help out. Only one catch: He doesn’t want his family to know about his stalker. Or the bodyguard thing. And so Hannah—against her will and her better judgment—finds herself pretending to be Jack’s girlfriend as a cover. Even though her ex, like a jerk, says no one will believe it.What could possibly go wrong???
Hannah hardly believes it, herself. But the more time she spends with Jack, the more real it all starts to seem. And there lies the heartbreak. Because it’s easy for Hannah to protect Jack. But protecting her own, long-neglected heart? That’s the hardest thing she’s ever done.
I thought that this book was fantastic! This is only the second Katherine Center book that I have read but I am convinced that I need to get busy reading the rest of her books after finishing this one. I was hooked by this story! Once I started listening to this book, I did not want to put it down because I was hooked. This book was the perfect combination of funny, romantic, and exciting, and I loved all of it.
Hannah and Jack were perfect together. This story is told from Hannah’s point of view and I felt for her at the start because she was really having a hard time. She was pushed into taking the lead in protecting Jack Stapleton, who is a famous movie star. Jack is in town because of his mother’s health and doesn’t want to worry his mom so he convinces Hannah to pretend to be his girlfriend instead of his bodyguard.
I fell in love with these characters and finished the book with a giant smile on my face. Hannah and Jack were perfectly matched and I really enjoyed their banter. It was great seeing them spend time with each other and start to fall for one another. This book had some great moments that I know will stay with me for a long time.
This is the first time that I have listened to Patti Murin’s narration and I think that she has earned a spot on the list of narrators that I will look for. She did such a great job in bringing these characters to life and I thought that she delivered the humor in the story expertly. I am convinced that her narration added to my enjoyment of this delightful story. I will be recommending this book to anyone who will listen and hope to read more of this author’s work very soon.
I received a digital review copy of this book from St. Martin’s Press and purchased a copy of the audiobook.
Oh it looks great! You made me curious to try her books!
Lovely review, I really liked this one too!
It’s official: I’m the only person alive who has not read this book. lol Sounds like the narrator was excellent so I’ll have to go the audio route if/when I ever get around to this one.
Great review! I also want to manage to read more of her backlist.
I heard great things about this book, Glad to see you enjoyed it.
I really think that a narration can either make or break a story. I am glad that this one was done so well though. I will definitely look into that narrator and see if she has done any romance I would be interested it.
Glad that this one was such a win for you! I know everyone seems to love Katherine Center. You definitely have made me curious in trying her out.
I can’t wait to read this one! 😀
Carole, Center’s books are all so good. I love them so much, and this was no exception. I did think it was a bit different from the last few, but still warm and full of humor. The “family” Hannah found for herself was wonderful too.
I would definitely liked to listen to this one 🙂
