As a magical revolution remakes a city, an ancient evil is awakened in a brilliant novel from the Hugo-nominated author of Foundryside and the Divine Cities trilogy.

“An absolutely wild ride . . . Foundryside blew me away, and this is a perfect sequel.”—Amal El-Mohtar, The New York Times Book Review

A few years ago, Sancia Grado would’ve happily watched Tevanne burn. Now, she’s hoping to transform her city into something new. Something better. Together with allies Orso, Gregor, and Berenice, she’s about to strike a deadly blow against Tevanne’s cruel robber-baron rulers and wrest power from their hands for the first time in decades.

But then comes a terrifying warning: Crasedes Magnus himself, the first of the legendary hierophants, is about to be reborn. And if he returns, Tevanne will be just the first place to feel his wrath.

Thousands of years ago, Crasedes was an ordinary man who did the impossible: Using the magic of scriving—the art of imbuing objects with sentience—he convinced reality that he was something more than human. Wielding powers beyond comprehension, he strode the world like a god for centuries, meting out justice and razing empires single-handedly, cleansing the world through fire and destruction—and even defeating death itself.

Like it or not, it’s up to Sancia to stop him. But to have a chance in the battle to come, she’ll have to call upon a god of her own—and unlock the door to a scriving technology that could change what it means to be human. And no matter who wins, nothing will ever be the same.

The awe-inspiring second installment of the Founders Trilogy, Shorefall returns us to the world Robert Jackson Bennett created in his acclaimed Foundryside . . . and forges it anew.

Why did I add Shorefall to my bookshelf?

This is another past-due NetGalley book. I am down to only 17 past due at this point – not that I am counting. (Of course I am counting!) I just finished Foundryside and loved it so I am really eager to jump into the next book in the trilogy. I enjoyed the audiobook of the first book so I think that I will go route again with this book. I think that this will be a perfect book to pair with a puzzle or two during the month of December.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it?

  1. This is from 2021, not that old. The only problem with huge gaps between reading series is remembering anything important from the last book. And, wow! Only 17 left. I have way more, but do not the ambition to read most of them.

  2. Oh nice! That’s a new to me one! My pick is yet another buried Kindle deal I got how many years ago! Lol. It still sounds interesting though, I can’t remember if it’s a standalone or not, so here’s hoping it is a one and done or else I’m going to go crazy trying to find the rest! Lol!

  3. haha of course you are counting, what else are going to do? I did the same thing before I got caught up, but its worth it in the end to see your percentage at 99 or 100%. I hope you enjoy the journey of this one though.

    Happy Reading!

  4. 17 is not bad at all! I was stuck there for ages and finally worked my way through them. Some were 4 years old (omg) and one was already out of print. Yikes, I won’t be doing that again.

  5. Wow that’s quite a cover. I think I remember the first book coming out and thinking that one was distinctive too.

  6. LOL, I have to get competitive about my NetGalley numbers and score to get it down to reasonable, too. Way to go! Yeah, the world of this series does pull me in. Enjoy, Carole!

    • I don’t do a lot of yearly challenges so I don’t keep track of them like I probably should. I really don’t know of one that would fit. Sorry that I am not more help!

  7. 17 is impressive! My overdue shelf number is down but I’m not to the point I’m counting yet because it would just be depressing. Soon though! I hope you love this one just as much as you did the first book.
