Peter Pan as you've never imagined it before: a love triangle between Wendy, Pete, and Hook set in the endless summer of modern-day coastal California.

A twisty story about love, loss, and lies, this contemporary oceanside adventure is tinged with a touch of dark magic as it follows seventeen-year-old Wendy Darling on a search for her missing surfer brothers. Wendy's journey leads her to a mysterious hidden cove inhabited by a tribe of young renegade surfers, most of them runaways like her brothers. Wendy is instantly drawn to the cove's charismatic leader, Pete, but her search also points her toward Pete's nemesis, the drug-dealing Jas. Enigmatic, dangerous, and handsome, Jas pulls Wendy in even as she's falling hard for Pete. A radical reinvention of J. M. Barrie's classic, Second Star is an irresistible summer romance about two young men who have yet to grow up—and the troubled beauty trapped between them.

Why did I add Second Star to my bookshelf?

I have had this book on my NetGalley shelf for so long that I cannot remember what the heck I was thinking when I downloaded it. I have been working hard to catch up my NetGalley backlog (14 past due books to go!) and noticed that this book is available on Kindle Unlimited which make it a little easier to work in so I think that it is time to give it a try. I am not sure what I think about the fact that this is a Peter Pan retelling but you never know.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it?

  1. I actually remembered reading this one…from Netgalley even! Lol! I was intrigued because it was a Peter Pan story but ultimately I remember not liking it as much. I think because it was a “contemporary” retelling. And you know me, I am not a contemporary reader! I remember a love triangle between “Wendy” with “Peter” and “Hook” and instead of flying it was surfing. It was unique enough but just not my kind of read.

  2. Hmmmm – your book sounds kind of interesting. It’s hard to catch up once you fall behind with Netgalley, isn’t it? I’m trying really hard to cut back my requests in 2023 and read some from my too-long TBR. We’ll see how my intent holds out over the year.

  3. A Peter Pan retelling? I haven’t heard of this one but it sounds interesting. I’m anxious to hear your thoughts on this one after you read it, Carole.

  4. I remember when this came out! I’m not a big fan of Peter Pan retellings (or probably the original story – I’m sold on the Disney version) but I hope you love it!
