An aimless young woman starts writing to an accused serial killer while he awaits trial and then, once he’s acquitted, decides to move in with him and take the investigation into her own hands in this dark and irresistibly compelling debut thriller.
Recently ghosted and sick of watching her friends fade into the suburbs, thirty-something Hannah finds community in a true-crime forum that’s on a mission to solve the murders of four women in Atlanta. After William, a handsome lawyer, is arrested for the killings, Hannah begins writing him letters. It’s the perfect outlet for her pent-up frustration and rage. The exercise empowers her, and even feels healthy at first.
Until William writes back.
Hannah’s interest in the case goes from curiosity to obsession, leaving space for nothing else as her life implodes around her. After she loses her job, she heads to Georgia to attend the trial and befriends other true-crime junkies like herself. When a fifth woman is discovered murdered, the jury has no choice but to find William not guilty, and Hannah is the first person he calls upon his release. The two of them quickly fall into a routine of domestic bliss.
Well, as blissful as one can feel while secretly investigating their partner for serial murder…
I am a huge fan of some of the darker books published lately so I jumped at the chance to read Love Letters to a Serial Killer. I was even more excited when I noticed Andi Arndt narrated the audiobook and moved the book to the top of my audiobook queue. I ended up enjoying the story quite a bit.
Hannah leads a pretty lonely life stuck in a job that probably isn’t going anywhere. She enjoys spending time in an online forum focused on serial killers. She eventually decides to write William who has been accused of the murders of several women. And he writes back. She eventually goes to the trial where she can see William in the flesh. When a new murder victim is found and William is released, they become a couple. Hannah is not quite sure how innocent he really is though. Obviously, I didn’t relate to Hannah at all, but it was fun to see what she would do in this story. She made one bad decision after another leading her to the side of a man she did not trust. I was curious about how much danger she was in and couldn’t wait to see how things would play out.
Andi Arndt did a fantastic job with the narration of this book. She does a great job of bringing the cast of characters to life with her wide range of voices. I thought that she added just the right amount of emotion to her reading to keep me hooked. She has a very pleasant voice that is easy to listen to for hours at a time. I am certain that her performance added to my overall enjoyment of this book.
I would recommend this book to others. I found this to be a fun story that kept me hooked until the very end. This is the first book by Tasha Coryell that I have had a chance to read but I hope to pick up more of her work soon.
I received a review copy of this book from Berkley Publishing Group and Penguin Random House Audio.
I have to admit, I’ve never understood women who write to convicts…especially serial killers. But this book does sound like a really good one, and one I wouldn’t mind reading.
This one sounds interesting but also like who would do that? It’s just asking for trouble I would think.
Oh that sounds like a good one. I like a look into a serial killer’s mind as well so this sounds good to me.
That is….wow. Ok just move in with that maybe killer
I’m curious about this one! The basic premise (writing to serial killers and getting involved with one) gives me the ick but the twist on the premise where she’s investigating him makes it intriguing. I will have to give it a try since you enjoyed it! And I’ll have to look for the audio.
