Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread.  If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks.
If you would like to join in, please feel free to enter your link and link back to this post, then spend some time visiting some of the other posts.
This week’s neglected book

Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer
Series: Southern Reach #1
Release Date: February 4, 2014
Publisher: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux

Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer.

This is the twelfth expedition.

Their group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain and collect specimens; to record all their observations, scientific and otherwise, of their surroundings and of one another; and, above all, to avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.

They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers—they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding—but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them, and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another, that change everything.

Why did I add Annihilation to my bookshelf?
I actually won an ARC of this book in a Goodreads giveaway back in December 2013.  I have no idea why I haven’t managed to find a moment to read this book sometime in the past four plus years.  It looks exactly like something I would enjoy plus it is rather short at less than 200 pages so it wouldn’t even take a lot of time to read.  I saw a preview for the movie that was released earlier this year and promptly found this book so that I can have easy access as soon as I could squeeze it in…which hasn’t happened yet but I think it will very soon.
What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. Congrats on that win! A blast from the past. This book is new to me despite it being "old". I hope you enjoy it if/when you read it!

Have a lovely week, Carole. =)

  2. I hope the movie come out soon. I don't know that I want to read the books but maybe someday.

  3. Bad u! I get scared when I got an angry email from Gr..ok not angry, but yes I read my gr giveaway at once lol

  4. Love your new meme! Found out about it through another blogger. I could be a poster child for unread books…look forward to joining in as soon as I can organize a post, possibly beginning next week.

  5. Oh how I know that feeling. My last GR win sits in a stack that I keep "meaning" to read. I think they use that against you in future win draws too or at least that's what I read somewhere.

  6. This is funny. I just heard about this book in a booktuber's vlog and it was one on her list of TBR pile books to read soon, too.

It looks exciting. I'm curious to see what you think of it when you get the chance to read it.

  7. OK, so the synopsis immediately had me wondering why anyone else would want to visit this place. Surely learn from past experiences, fence it off and let well alone? But I guess that would result in an even shorter book!

  8. I haven't read this one, but I just discovered it's a trilogy. It doesn't seem like a book I would enjoy. I do hope if you ever get around to reading it, that you like it. Maybe next week I can join in the fun. Have a great day.

    • I have a feeling that the fact that it is a trilogy may have been the reason I set it aside waiting to get the other 2 books…which never happened. I would love for you to join in, Jovita!
