Stacking the Shelves #156

Posted February 3, 2019 by Carole in Stacking the Shelves / 44 Comments

I am really excited to participate in Stacking the Shelves, a weekly meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading Reality.

My Life
It was a good week.  I did a lot of traveling this week and I must say that I am pretty worn out from it.  We headed out of town Thursday night so that we would be sure to make my daughter’s college music audition on time on Friday since the school is 3 1/2 hours away.  By the time we made it home Friday, I was beat.  We were up bright and early the next day to head to another college for another audition and scholarship interview.  This school was about 2 1/2 hours from home but we drove through a dense fog the entire trip there so it took a bit longer.  I was out of town last weekend for a college trip and have to go on another one next weekend.  I can’t wait until all the scholarship offers are on the table and a decision has been made.

Books Added

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang (Edelweiss)
The One You Can’t Forget by Roni Loren (Kindle Purchase)

I am trying not to add too many ARCs to my review pile this yeat but I had to grab The Bride Test when given the chance.  I have wanted to read Roni Loren’s series and could resist The One You Can’t Forget when it went on sale this past week.

The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe by Ally Condie (Bookish First)

I was pretty excited to get my hands on a copy of The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe since it sounds really good.  I am looking forward to giving it a try.

Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King (Audible Purchase)
Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine (Audible Purchase)
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill (Audible Purchase)

Audible had a sale and I have zero will power when it comes to buying books.  Ink and Bone and Heart-Shaped Box will be re-reads for me and I couldn’t pass up Full Dark, No Stars at the sale price.

I also bought a box of books from Book Outlet (see zero will power) but I will have to share those books next week 🙂

What books do you add to your shelves this week?
Let me know in the comments and be sure to leave a link to your own STS post!

  1. Wow you have been traveling a lot! College prep and visiting and everything else just takes so much time now! And ooh a box of books! Yay haha!!

    Have a great week.

  2. I hope there is a decision soon on colleges so you can get a break at the weekends! Most of the charity shop books for sale seem to be romance, crime and kids so I don't usually find much to buy when I'm out and about these days! My dad loves moseying through these shops looking for cds and dvds!

  3. Oh wow. That's a lot of driving! This coming from me who didn't blink an eye at a 10 hour drive to Texas where I did all the driving! Lol. That's just a lot of of trips all packed into one! Hope her decision making goes well!

Nice new reads! Totally new to me ones but I hope you will enjoy them all!

    Here's my STS

    Have a GREAT day!

  4. The college trips sound like they are going well.
You have good willpower with NG and EW this year. 🙂

You got some good ones in your Audible sale haul. Look forward to seeing what you got from Book Outlet.

    Have a great week, Carole!

  5. I remember logging onto EW last week and seeing that green button for The Bride Test. ABSOLUTELY jumped on that opportunity. I haven't read a Condie book since the Matched series. Hope you enjoy it! May your daughter be showered with an abundance of scholarship offers.

  6. Hopefully you did some research and planning to reduce the total number of trips to colleges. It's a lot of work but an important decision. It's not only the finances but the overall fit and the available coursework and the fit with the faculty. I feel I was lucky to get it right without all the information which is available now.

When I'm on a trip it's usually exciting and fun. When I get home, yeah, I'm exhausted. For me traveling requires even more planning than usual. Hopefully you can talk or listen to audiobooks or something to utilize the drive time.

You're doing really well on keeping control of the inflow of books. I pretty much only buy digital these days and only things I can't get at the library.

Get some rest and take care of yourself before the next round of travel. Anne – Books of My Heart

    • Not all kids would need to do so many college visits but my daughter is a music major so she has to audition at every school that she is considering to see if she is a good fit. An audition is required for all music majors so this is not an optional thing we are doing and the auditions are only held on a few days so you have to work one of them from each school into your schedule. My daughter is also an exceptional student and was invited to compete for several huge scholarships. To compete for these scholarships you have to be at the school on the one day they hold interviews. If you can't make, you will not be considered. She was competing for a full ride on Saturday. She may not get it but we had to try.

Our experience is not the norm since only a few majors will require auditions and not many kids qualify to compete for these big scholarships. Hopefully, she will be offered at least one scholarship that will cover most if not all of her tuition and room and board but we have to go through the process.

  7. I don't miss all those college trips! We only went on a couple because my daughter's major wasn't as specific and she had pretty much made up her mind where she wanted to go. I can relate to the exhaustion. Hope you were able to take it easy for a bit after. That audible sale got me too though it usually does. I don't have much willpower either. Have a great week!

  8. Yes, traveling can be so exhausting for sure. So hope you recover quickly. I was given a copy of Bride Test and was shocked that I didn't even have to request it so I read it over the weekend and it was AMAZING. if you loved the Kiss Quotient then you will love The Bride Test. I can't wait to see what you think about it and hope you have a fun time reading it.

  9. I bet you are feeling ready for a decision to just be made. At least your daughter will be well informed when she decides. Looks like you got some good books this week. I'm seeing The Bride Test around a lot.

  10. I can understand why you're tired. That's a lot of time on the road. Nice to have that many scholarships offers for your daughter! I like your audible haul. And our local library has sa small book store in it. They have these large brown paper bag sales now and then. You can't see what's inside and they are packed with books. All you know is what genre they are that's written on the bag. I usually grab several of them. They are usually filled with popular authors and the books are paperback and hard cover.

  11. I also took advantage of the sale on Audible. I have zero will power myself. I am trying to put myself on a ban till at least spring break. =) We shall see how that goes. I know about the traveling and I have my fingers crossed she gets the one she has her heart set on! I did not influence my daughter in anyway. But she has decided to do the first two here at home and then move to her dream college in NY. That is her plan. I want her to do what makes her happy and she said "Mom, this is what I want". We shall see. Have a wonderful week.

  12. Oh, that's a lot of traveling. Hope the choice is made soon!

I can't resist Audible sales either! They had me on the last one and they just put up a 2 for 1 sale that I'll be clicking over to soon. I got a copy of The Bride Test, too, and I can't wait!

  13. Traveling can be something very busy and really gets you tired easily! I hope you will be able to rest and relax this week. Ink and Bone is on my shelf and I am looking forward to reading it ^.^

  14. I have been pretty good since Christmas. I bought two hardcovers from an indie author I love because she only has her buying page up from November through January, and all the rest of the physicals were unsolicited from authors. Oh, and I got my hardcover of Stain, but I preordered that in November. ?

I don't blame you with the audible sale! I love audios so much, now. ?

  15. I hope the audition went well for your daughter, Carole! Although it's been over twenty years, I still remember when I was deciding which school to go to and waiting to see what the financial aid/scholarships would look like. I wish your family the best. The Bride Test sounds like it will be fun. I hope you enjoy it! I hope you enjoy them all, really. Have a great weekend, Carole!
