Lieutenant Eve Dallas delves into the world of virtual reality gaming to stop a sadistic killer in this In Death novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb.

They died with smiles on their faces. Three apparent suicides: a brilliant engineer, an infamous lawyer, and a controversial politician. Three strangers with nothing in common—and no obvious reasons for killing themselves. Police lieutenant Eve Dallas finds the deaths suspicious. And her instincts pay off when autopsies reveal small burns on the brains of the victims.

Was it a genetic abnormality or a high-tech method of murder? Eve’s investigation turns to the provocative world of virtual reality games—where the same techniques used to create joy and desire can also prompt the mind to become the weapon of its own destruction...

This was just as good as I had hoped that it would be! Eve and Roarke are newly married and Eve encounters the first dead body in this tale before the honeymoon is even over. A string of unrelated deaths that appear to be suicides leaves Eve questioning what really might be happening. From the start, I was hooked by this mystery and loved watching Eve work to get to the bottom of things. I thought this was a very smartly written mystery that pulled a lot of significant elements together.

I thought that Susan Ericksen did a fantastic job with the story. I believe that the voices that she uses for the various characters are well done and do a great job of bringing the story to life. I do believe that her narration added to my overall enjoyment of the story.

I would definitely recommend this book to others. This is the fourth book in the In Death series but it could be read as a stand-alone since the mystery is completely contained in this installment. Readers who choose to read the series in order will enjoy watching the personal relationships between the characters grow and change. I can’t wait to read more of this entertaining series.

#1 New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb presents the fifth thrilling novel in her futuristic In Death series—where even in an age of cutting-edge technology, old beliefs die hard.

Conducting a top secret investigation into the death of a fellow police officer has Lieutenant Eve Dallas treading on dangerous ground. She must put professional ethics before personal loyalties. But when a dead body is placed outside her home, Eve takes the warnning personally. With her husband, Roarke, watching her every move, Eve is drawn into the most dangerous case of her career. Every step she takes makes her question her own beliefs of right and wrong—and brings her closer to a confrontation with humanity's most seductive form of evil...

This was another great installment! Eve is put into a bad situation when she is asked to investigate the death of a former cop. It seems like everyone but Roarke was a little mad at her at some point during the story. Have I mentioned that Roarke is awesome?! I really liked some of his actions in this installment and there is no question that he would do anything for Eve. I was kind of irritated by Eve’s superiors for putting her in such a bad situation and her co-workers for not understanding but I thought that Eve handled everything brilliantly.

I listened to the audiobook and thought that Susan Ericksen did a great job once again. She has become the voice of these characters for me and I cannot imagine experiencing the series in any other way. I definitely recommend grabbing the audiobook if you decide to give this series a try which I hope you do. I cannot wait to listen to the next installment!

In this In Death novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb, Lieutenant Eve Dallas learns that when technology links the law and the lawless, predators and prey can become one and the same…

He is an expert with the latest technology...a madman with the mind of a genius and the heart of a killer. He quietly stalks his prey. Then he haunts the police with cryptic riddles about the crimes he is about to commit—always solved moments too late to save his victims' lives. Police lieutenant Eve Dallas found the first victim butchered in his own home. The second lost his life in a vacant luxury apartment. The two men had little in common. Both suffered unspeakable torture before their deaths. And both had ties to an ugly secret of ten years past—a secret shared by none other than Eve's new husband, Roarke.

This was an incredibly exciting installment! There is a killer on the loose and he seems to be playing games with Eve. He gives her just enough hints to keep her in the game but he always seems to be one step ahead of her. The fact that the victims seem to be connected to Roarke and Summerset is her number one suspect only adds to the suspense. The mystery kept me guessing until the very end and I was satisfied by how the story drew to a conclusion.

Susan Ericksen did a phenomenal job with the narration. I really enjoy the consistency that she has brought to the series and the voices and accents that she uses for the characters adds a lot to the reading. I definitely recommend this series to others who are looking for an engaging mystery. The mystery in this book was top-notch and the characters were incredibly well-done. I cannot wait to read more of this fantastic series!

  1. I love these books and the comfort and consistency means I end up rating them higher than you do, but I am current. I have read all of them on ebook but one. Susan Erickson is a great narrator but in my head she is VI Warshawski and her voice sounds too old to me for Eve. That’s just how it is sometimes. There are some narrators I can listen to on many audiobooks and some where they are just a certain character and I can’t shake it.

Anyway, I love this series and am so glad you are getting to enjoy it.

  2. I bought the first book in this series not long ago and have been meaning to read this series for literally decades. I’m so glad to see that you are reading and enjoying the early books. I’m looking forward to starting it!
