From the New York Times bestselling author of How to Walk Away and Things You Save in a Fire

Helen Carpenter can’t quite seem to bounce back. Newly divorced at thirty-two, her life has fallen apart beyond her ability to put it together again. So when her annoying younger brother, Duncan, convinces her to sign up for a hardcore wilderness survival course in the backwoods of Wyoming—she hopes it’ll be exactly what she needs.

Instead, it’s a disaster. It’s nothing like she wants, or expects, or anticipates. She doesn’t anticipate the surprise summer blizzard, for example—or the blisters, or the rutting elk, or the mean pack of sorority girls. And she especiallydoesn’t anticipate that her annoying brother’s even-more-annoying best friend, Jake, will show up for the exact same course—and distract her, derail her, and . . . kiss her.

But it turns out sometimes disaster can teach you exactly the things you need to learn. Like how to keep going, even when you think you can’t. How being scared can make you brave. And how sometimes getting really, really lost is your only hope of getting found.

Happiness for Beginners is Katherine Center at her most heart-warming, captivating best—a nourishing, page-turning, up-all-night read about how to get back up. It’s a story that looks at how our struggles lead us to our strengths. How love is always worth it. And how the more good things we look for, the more we find.

Why did I add Happiness for Beginners to my bookshelf?

I picked up a copy of this audiobook almost a year ago during a sale. I do love Katherine Center’s writing and am excited to listen to this audiobook. When I was at the author event for Katherine Center’s newest book, they played the trailer for the Netflix film which is available to stream starting today. I think that this looks like a fun read and I can’t wait to watch the movie, too!

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it?

  1. Nice! That’s another new to me one but fun that’s already on Netflix! I always go into bookish shows/movies with a bit of trepidation! Lol. But still a bit of excitement too! Hope you enjoy them both!

  2. SQUEEE! This book, OMG, this book made me so happy. It’s such a fantastic comeback story. I hope you love it

  3. I liked this one. There were a few frustrating moments with the main character, but overall it was a fun read. And I enjoyed all the hiking parts. 😀

  4. This post has reminded me of my own backlog of audiobooks. Without the visual reminder of seeing the physical books on my shelves, it is much easier to forget about digital copies. I’m thinking a good list of titles is in order!

  5. This does sound like a good read and I have pretty much all of this author’s books on my TBR. One day (soon hopefully!) I’ll actually read one.

  6. This was my first Katherine Center book and I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t my favorite from her. I do absolutely love her writing. I listened to it as well. I’m going to watch the movie tonight. Hope we both love it!
