A woman must learn to take life by the throat after a night out leads to irrevocable changes in this juicy, thrilling novel from the USA Today bestselling author of Such Sharp Teeth and Black Sheep.
Sloane Parker is dreading her birthday. She doesn’t need a reminder she’s getting older, or that she’s feeling indifferent about her own life. Her husband surprises her with a birthday-weekend getaway—not with him, but with Sloane’s longtime best friend, troublemaker extraordinaire Naomi. Sloane anticipates a weekend of wine tastings and cozy robes and strategic avoidance of issues she’d rather not confront, like her husband’s repeated infidelity.
But when they arrive at their rental cottage, it becomes clear Naomi has something else in mind. She wants Sloane to stop letting things happen to her, for Sloane to really live. So Naomi orchestrates a wild night out with a group of mysterious strangers, only for it to take a horrifying turn that changes Sloane’s and Naomi’s lives literally forever. The friends are forced to come to terms with some pretty eternal consequences in this bloody, seductive novel about how it’s never too late to find satisfaction, even though it might taste different than expected.
This was good! I have read and enjoyed several of Rachel Harrison’s books so I was eager to get started with her newest release. I am generally a fan of vampire stories and couldn’t wait to read her take on the genre. I couldn’t imagine dealing with everything that Sloan faces in this novel and couldn’t wait to see how things would work out for her. I found this novel to be fun, entertaining, and thought-provoking.
Sloan’s husband books a trip for her with her best friend, Naomi, to celebrate her birthday. Naomi wants Sloan to live a little and talks her into going to a party with her that gets out of control. Neither of their lives will ever be the same. Sloan and Naomi’s friendship is tested, and they learn to navigate their new, bloodier, lifestyle. Sloan grows a lot as a character throughout this story and there is even a bit of romance to keep things very interesting.
Brittany Pressley breathes life into this story with her excellent narration. I have listened to quite of few of her performances and she is quickly becoming a favorite narrator. I liked the voices that she used for the various characters and I felt that she was able to add emotion to the reading. I am certain that her narration added to my enjoyment of this story.
I would recommend this book to others. Both Sloane and Naomi face a lot of challenges in this story and I enjoyed watching them navigate them together. The story had enough action to keep the pages flying which made the book hard to put down. I can’t wait to read more of Rachel Harrison’s work in the future!
