A tale of honor, dragons, and a love that endures beyond death

Come for the journey through the underworld. Stay for the suspiciously familiar winged cat.

After their dubiously successful quest to slay the White Lady and recover the Fireborne Blade, Sir Maddileh and Saralene set about changing their world for the better. But the cursed and newly-promoted High Mage Saralene must visit the afterlife to ask a favor of the Bloodless Princes who run the underworld.

But Saralene and Sir Maddileh will soon discover that the old tales only hold so much truth in them, though perhaps there’s enough to make a start on their new journey.

To escape the underworld alive, Saralene will need a lot more than just her wits. And Maddileh will need more than just her Fireborne Blade.

This was good! After enjoying the first installment in this series, The Fireborne Blade, I was eager to see what might happen in this installment. This novella can easily be read in a single sitting but delivers a story that packs quite the punch. I didn’t like this installment quite as much as I liked the first but I still had a fantastic time with it.

Saraline and Maddileh have a plan but it comes with a bit of danger since it will force them to face the Bloodless Princes in the underworld, with some help from a dragon masquerading as a cat. I found this book quite entertaining. I was not sure exactly how things would work out, and I loved learning a bit more about the history that brought about the current situation. There were a few rather tense moments where I wasn’t quite sure what would happen which only added to my enjoyment.

Helen McAlpine does a fantastic job with the narration of this book. I found her voice to be very pleasant and was able to listen to the entire novella in a single sitting. She handles the voices of the various characters very well and adds just the right amount of emotion to her reading. I am certain that her performance only added to my overall enjoyment.

I would recommend this book to others. I found this novella to be a worthy follow-up to the first book in the series. I am not sure if there will be more books in the series but I wouldn’t hesitate to read more about the characters in this world.

I received a review copy of this audiobook from Macmillan Audio.

  1. I’m glad the second book lived up to the first. It’s always so disappointing when that doesn’t happen I haven’t listened to that narrator before but I’ll have to look for her books. A good narrator really makes a book.
