My Life

This was a pretty average week. I had to go to work everyday which wasn’t a lot of fun. I tried to tell my boss that I should have Friday off since they failed to acknowledge me on Administrative Assistants day but he offered me lunch instead. I spent some time every week trying to convince my boss to give me extra time off so this really was nothing new. The phones were busier than normal the last couple of day of the week so I didn’t get as much time with my audiobooks as I usually do which was a bit of a bummer.

Friday after work, my sister that lives across the state was in town along with my niece and great-niece. Yes, I have great-nieces and great-nephews and I am not sure how that happened. I remember thinking that all of my great-aunts were old and I can’t be old yet, right? Anyway, we had a very nice visit with them, my mom, and my other sister and her family.

On Saturday, I hit a few independent bookstores for Independent Bookstore Day! I seemed to forget that I have a book-buying budget and ended up buying myself a lot of books. I also was able to snag a few ARCs as free gifts which are awesome. My husband doesn’t read but he came along to play chauffeur and he carried a few books for me. At my first stop, Main Street Books in historic St. Charles, I ran into Jessica from a GREAT Read and we had a great time catching up on all things books.

Today we are headed to my daughter’s college to pick up most of her stuff. She has a few more days at school but should be able to take a few things home in her car. At least I can listen to audiobooks during the drive.

How was your week?

What I’m Reading

I read 4 books this week. I had a ton of fun listening to Pale Demon by Kim Harrison and am loving the direction the series is going. The Closer by Leslie Pike was a nice romantic shorter listen. Tear Down the Throne by Jennifer Estep was a wonderful read. Once I reached a certain point in this story, I found it almost impossible to set the book aside. Run Rose Run by Dolly Parton and James Patterson was an entertaining listen and well-done full-cast audio.

I am around 40% (maybe more by the time you are reading this) into The Island by Adrian McKinty and am loving the fast pace of the story so far. I have only read the first chapter of The Latecomer by Jean Hanff Korelitz and haven’t formed an opinion yet. I have listened to half of I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston and am enjoying it so far.

Books Added

  1. Hope you have a safe trip and enjoy your audiobooks on your drive. My audiobook listening has taken such a hit with my job. I hope to get to the point where I can multitask more because I miss listening to books. I am sure you are a young great-aunt to your much older sibling’s children. Have a great week!

    • I do enjoy my audiobook time. I get crabby if I am doing things at work that make listening to a book impossible.

I love your explanation for my great aunt status 🙂

  2. It was so nice catching up with you again! I debated about going out to Novel Neighbor after a few errands but then just got too tired out! Lol. Plus I figure I’m saving myself some money. Lol. My last job didn’t acknowledge me on administrative assistant’s day either. I picked up everyone else’s lunch more than I was ever treated with kindness. Definitely happy to be gone from there! My new title has admin in it, but it’s not really the traditional admin role, plus we’re all working from home, so I don’t have to do anyone’s errands anymore, so yay!

Nice haul! You got a lot of nice things too! I hope you enjoy all of your new reads!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

    • The Novel Neighbor was incredibly crowded so we didn’t stay too long. I am not really an administrative assistant but I do most of the paperwork in the office. They don’t acknowledge me but I wanted a day off and I am always coming up with some reason to have the day off even though it never works. It is kind of a joke at this point.

  3. It looks like you had read some great books there. I do need to read that Jennifer Estep series and soon. I just hear the best things. I always tend to buy more books than I probably should haha

  4. What a busy week! You still managed to read a lot. Yes college sessions are near to end. It’s finals week for my daughter. I also had quite the haul this week but all digital. Happy May Day!

    • I was able to get some reading in but I am obviously way behind on blog hopping and commenting.

  5. Fun to visit with family and fit in a bookshopping weekend. I have three great nephews and niece and I have to wrap my mind around that. I am late on hitting the Indie bookshop, but I am going on Monday since I need to run errands in the area. Glad you’re enjoying several good books right now. Safe travels to pick up your daughter’s goods.

    Have a great week, Carole!

    • It is weird to see so many people my age with grandkids but then I realize that I could easily be a grandparent since my daughter is 27. Time moves so quickly! I hope you had a great time visiting your indie bookstore.

  6. Enjoy your trip! I’m guilty of forgetting about my book-buying budget as well, which definitely doesn’t help that my mom has been bugging to me get a particular book for her when I’m on my next book shopping trip. 😂 I hope you’ll enjoy all your picks and I’m especially curious on what you think of Blood Heir – I keep meaning to read that one but just never got around to it.

Bummer your boss didn’t give you off on Friday for Administrative Assistants Day. 🙁 My audiobook time has definitely taken a bit of nosedive, especially on the weeks I’m rotating in since there’s always calls to handle.

    • It is so hard to stick to a budget when shopping for books! Independent Bookstore Day only happens once a year so I guess it is okay that I spent so much.

  7. I imagine it must be a hard situation, trying to get the Friday off and some more free time. I only worked 4 days the last schoolyear and I never want it to change again…

Buying books is so much fun! I’m usually on a budget as well, but I bought 8 books this month and I’m happy with every single one, haha. No guilty feelings!!

    • I didn’t really expect to get the day off but I always try to get extra time off. A 4 day workweek sounds amazing!

  8. Too funny that you’re always trying to convince your boss to give you time off. 🙂 Hopefully sometimes he relents? 🙂 I wish we had more indie bookstores here. I live in the largest city (area-wise) in the country, so why so few? Sad. I want to try something by Jennifer Estep at some point.

    • It is kind of the joke around the office. This week I am trying to convince my boss to bring tacos and margaritas for Cinco de Mayo and we would of course need Friday off to recover. It’s not going to happen but I’ll keep asking.
