My Life

This was a pretty calm week. We had some storms in the area last weekend. I was okay but I know that a lot of people around me were dealing with downed trees and loss of power. Part of my neighborhood was without power for 3 days so I feel very lucky that we were not affected.

It felt rather strange to have a holiday in the middle of the week. Two of our three dogs are scared of fireworks so we always stay home to try to keep them calm so we didn’t do anything to actually celebrate the holiday. I enjoyed having more time at home but I kept thinking it was Saturday all day and by the end of the week, I had no idea what day it was.

How was your week?

What I’m Reading

I read 4 books this week. I thought Ebony Gate by Julia Vee & Ken Bebelle was a wonderful start to an urban fantasy series I look forward to following. Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann was an incredibly well-done dark romance that I just couldn’t put down. I adored You, with a View by Jessica Joyce, and am amazed that this is the author’s debut novel. My favorite from the week was Star Bringer by Tracy Wolff & Nina Croft. This book was full of wonderful characters and enough surprises to keep me glued to the pages.

I have listened to around 25% of The Carnivale of Curiosities by Amiee Gibbs. I am having a bit of trouble following everything going on in the book so I might start over and follow along in the book so I can fully absorb all the details.

Books Added

Raiders of the Lost Heart by Jo Segura (Publisher); A Haunting in Hialeah Gardens by Raul Palma (Publisher); The Turncoat by T.J. London (Publisher)

  1. Yeah, I don’t like the holiday falling in the middle of the week. It just makes coming back to work harder. Lol. Our power was finally restored late Monday night, about 21 hours earlier than their anticipated restoration time so we were happy! I pretty much was happy to stay home Tuesday!

Nice new reads! Those are all new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

  2. I worked from home Friday (the previous week) and then Monday, so the day off on Tuesday didn’t feel so odd. I had essentially been home for 5 days at that point. That’s terrible that your area had an outage for that long. It’s hot. That had to be a struggle. (flashbacks of Sandy!) Glad you were not affected. The Joyce book was so good! Happy to hear it was a hit for you too

  3. Apollo does better with fireworks than Cass did or even Booker T but they still make him a bit anxious. I understand the city doing a show but it’s all the idiots in the neighborhood letting them off a few days before and after that I can’t stand. We were on staycation most of the week which was nice. I’m seeing Star Bringer everywhere! Glad you liked it so much.

  4. I stayed home for the 4th of July too because falcons scared of the fireworks. And there were so many loud illegal ones in my neighborhood this year.

  5. I think I’ve been lucky to have dogs who weren’t so affected or I’ve lived far enough out in the burbs I didn’t get as much noise. Yes the middle of the week holiday messes up the whole week. I knew a guy who always took a week like this off. Also then he had to only take off 4 days instead of 5. So great you didn’t lose power.

  6. It is weird having a holiday in the middle of the week! We traveled back home from Montana that day and so I’m even more mixed up. I’m so happy we have no plans to go anywhere in the near future. Nice to see you adored You, With a View since I have that one as well. Must get reading!

  7. We had a mostly quiet 4th, too. We had a BBQ/Pool Party at the in-laws in the afternoon, but came home to be with our cats so they were calmer. Way to go reading four this week. The road trip one does sound cute. I got the Raiders of the Heart, too.

    Have a great week, Carole!

  8. It makes me so so happy you loved Still Beating. Its one of the best dark romances and is a great intro into the genre I feel like. There are some great books in that sub genre. Looks like you had a great week and 4th of July. I like fireworks but only on the holiday itself. But I feel for animals though.

  9. Oh gosh, I’m always out of sorts when holidays are during the week. I didn’t really do much either. It was nice to have some time off work though.

  10. Raiders of the Lost Heart looks adorable! We had some bad weather and the power blinked off a few times but luckily we didn’t lose it for very long. Glad you were able to avoid being out for 3 days! Have a great week!

  11. Thank goodness you didn’t lose power. That would have been awful in the heat of July.
I though Still Beating was excellent. I kept thinking about it long after I finished it.
