My Life

I hope that every who celebrated had a Merry Christmas and that you are having a wonderful New Year! I spent my Christmas alone with my dogs which sounds kind of sad but I enjoyed my quiet day of puzzles and audiobooks. My husband ended up working a lot over this Christmas holiday. The extreme cold caused some pipes to burst and he was called to deal with it. Thankfully, things have warmed up a lot. Work was very quiet this week which made for some very long days but things should pick up soon. We scheduled my dog’s surgery for the end of March and I admit that I am a little nervous about it.

How are you dealing with the HarperCollins strike? I only have a couple of books to review that fall under this publisher right now so I am going to do as the union is asking and hold my reviews for now. I know that everyone’s opinions regarding labor disputes may vary. I do hope that they can come to an agreement very soon.

How was your week?

What I’m Reading

I finished 6 again books this week. I spent Christmas day listening to a couple of short audiobooks while working on a puzzle. Showdown in Mudbug and Jana DeLeon and Travel by Bullet by Zachary Quinto were both entertaining stories. Then I moved on to Begin Again by Emma Lord which I really enjoyed. Then I finished a book published by HarperCollins and I will wait for the strike to be settled to talk more about that one. I jumped right into my Books from the Backlog pick this week and read Second Star by Alyssa B Sheimel which I liked but wanted more closure. I finished Locklands by Robert Jackson Bennett on New Year’s Eve and thought it was a fitting end to the trilogy.

I am almost done with Court of the Vampire Queen by Katee Robert and I am a bit surprised by just how much I am enjoying it.

Books Added

The God of Endings by Jacqueline Holland (Publisher); The Lost Witch by Paige Crutcher (Publisher)

  1. Happy New Year, Carole! I hope the pup’s surgery goes well. My sister’s dog had that surgery, and she healed up well. I liked the Lord book. It wasn’t my favorite by her, not sure what was missing for me, but it was a good time.

    • We have a bit of a wait for the surgery since it isn’t scheduled until the end of March. I will be nervous about it until it is over.

  2. Glad to hear you had a nice holiday, if it was a bit quiet. Ours was pretty good too! The only hiccup came that my brother in law had a cold and couldn’t really do Christmas dinner. But otherwise it was very nice! Hope the pupper’s surgery goes well. Somehow I don’t think I’ve heard of the HarperCollins strike! I guess I’m not on Social Media as much anymore…the holidays have been crazy so I know I wasn’t doing my usual stream of it all.

Nice new reads! Those are some new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    • It was kind of weird to spend most of the holidays all by myself but we did celebrate with family on the 23rd. I was hoping that the strike would be over quickly but it looks like it may last a while.

  3. HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you get some fabulous books to read there! I am on the fence concerning the strike, just because I don’t know much about the union itself or what the company actually gives to their employees to have a determined opinion. If there is something going on wrong, then I hope they get what they are asking for.

  4. I’m glad you were able to enjoy a nice holiday break. It was cold here too and now today is gorgeously warm. I have been watching the Harper strike. Since I get mostly audiobooks from them and I’m not getting them now, it’s not too hard to hold reviews. I do have a couple I got before. The people on the ebook side almost never approve me.

Happy New Year and happy reading!

    • The weather is crazy! I had on shorts yesterday and it was -5 just a little over a week ago.

I do have a few books that I received for review. I will just get my reviews ready and post them once the strike is over.

  5. Happy New Year! Quiet Christmases can be so nice and relaxing – especially if you have a book you want to read! Have a wonderful week!

    • It was kind of strange to be completely alone though. I am used to a lot of quiet days with my husband but it was just me.

  6. It’s been busy for me, but the actual Christmas day was quiet. Thankfully. This week New Year’s with family has been busy. I’m happy to be home now. Your Christmas sounds like just the kind of time off I love! I hope your dog’s surgery turns out well.

Didn’t know about the strike so I’ll have to look into it. Harper Collins almost never approves any of my requests so I don’t have to worry about holding anything.

    • I do like quiet time but it was strange to have even my husband gone. I will be a nervous wreck until she actually has her surgery in March.

I do get approved from some of the HarperCollins imprints. I was really hoping for a quick resolution.

  7. Your quiet Christmas Day doesn’t sound sad to me… more like perfect. 🙂 Christmas Day used to be the same for me. We’d see the whole family Christmas Eve and the next day t was just the two of us. Since my dad passed, my mom comes over on Christmas Day and there goes my quiet day. Ha!

    • I was looking forward to being home with my husband on Christmas but he was gone all day so I spent the time completely alone. My dad has been gone since 1994 so I do include my mother in a lot of quiet times.

  8. I just finished reading Paige Crutchers first book the Orphan Witch. Looking forward to her next book.

  9. Have a happy new year, Carole!

We had a quiet new year after hubby worked tons of overtime this week. Yeah that cold over Christmas gave him frostbite on the tops of his ears when he was out working in it. Yay for finishing six books and resting up.

    Have a good week!

  10. I bet a lot of people were grateful to your husband this holiday season. I am glad you had a nice Christmas despite the circumstances. I hadn’t heard of the Harper Collins strike. I’ll have to look into that.

Lost Witch sounds really good! I want to try Katee Robert’s books. Everyone seems to enjoy them. I hope you have a great reading week, Carole!

    • My husband works maintenance for our local library system. He was trying to keep the books and building from too much damage due to pipes bursting.

Katee Robert’s books are very spicy but I think that I must have been wanting something a little different than what I normally pick up.
