This week’s neglected book
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
Release Date: June 26, 1997
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
Harry Potter’s life is miserable. His parents are dead and he’s stuck with his heartless relatives, who force him to live in a tiny closet under the stairs. But his fortune changes when he receives a letter that tells him the truth about himself: he’s a wizard. A mysterious visitor rescues him from his relatives and takes him to his new home, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
After a lifetime of bottling up his magical powers, Harry finally feels like a normal kid. But even within the Wizarding community, he is special. He is the boy who lived: the only person to have ever survived a killing curse inflicted by the evil Lord Voldemort, who launched a brutal takeover of the Wizarding world, only to vanish after failing to kill Harry.
Though Harry’s first year at Hogwarts is the best of his life, not everything is perfect. There is a dangerous secret object hidden within the castle walls, and Harry believes it’s his responsibility to prevent it from falling into evil hands. But doing so will bring him into contact with forces more terrifying than he ever could have imagined.
Full of sympathetic characters, wildly imaginative situations, and countless exciting details, the first installment in the series assembles an unforgettable magical world and sets the stage for many high-stakes adventures to come.
Why did I add Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone to my bookshelf?
Can you believe that I haven’t read this one? Poor Harry Potter has spent a lot of years in my to be read pile. I don’t know why I haven’t read it. Both of my daughters have read the series and loved it. My oldest daughter is 23 now and I know that I have had my print copy since her elementary school days so probably close to 15 years now. As soon as this series was offered for sale as an ebook, I ran to Pottermore and bought the whole collection. I have had digital copies of these books for over 6 years. I don’t know why I haven’t picked them up yet. Everyone seems to love these books to death and maybe I am a little worried that I won’t like them quite a much. Hopefully, I will actually read these books at some point.
What are your thoughts? Have you read this book? Would you recommend it to others?

I totally love Harry Potter! I saw a bit of the hype close to the release of the 5th book on the news but had little interest in 'kids books'. A friend at work had been nagging me to read it for ages but I refused. Months later I was off sick and joined one of those book club things where you get the introductory offer. I saw the first four HP books in a box set for £2 and bought it. I was a fan after a couple of chapters!
I have most of the books in print and all of them in ebook. I will get to them at some point!
I just read them last year! Well listened. The audios were fantastic if you want to try that route. Also they get better as the series goes on.
I remember that you really liked the audios for this series. My daughter keeps telling me that she likes the fifth book the best.
I'm still on the third book. I got caught up in the movies and never got back to the books.
I haven't watched too many of the movies either. I am so far behind when it comes to Harry Potter.
You've never read Harry Potter? I read them all on audio and they are all fantastic, as I'm sure you've heard 🙂 I forgot to grab a book from the physical tbr this morning so I may not be joining in this week but you'll see me again next week 🙂
Oh, I lie! I did take a pic that I almost forgot about!
I have debated on whether I should get the audios for this series. Glad you were able to join in, Laurie!
I think you should leap right in. It's such a fun series and so many people hold it so dear in their hearts.
I am sure I will feel the need to start at some point. I hope that I love like others do.
Insert shocked face here – You haven't read HP!! Here I thought everyone had, even I have…lol. Not obsessed like a lot of people but they were enjoyable.
So many people assume that I have read these books. Eventually, I will get around to them 🙂
Lol. I have this series in my pile as well. Still unread. One of these days, I swear.
Yay! I am not alone in my neglect of this series 🙂
Whaaat? Well, it has been so long anyway 😉
Maybe you can read them to your grandkids in the future
I hope it is a long time before I have any grandchildren. Not ready for that at all!
Oh, this will be a good one. You'll love the series, I hope. My fav was book four. 🙂
My daughter says that her favorite is book five. Both of my kids loved the series so I do want to read it just to try to understand their fascination with all things Harry Potter.
I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books but I watched all the movies and enjoyed them.
I am even a failure when it comes to the movies. Someday…
I read the whole series and I loved it. The books get longer and longer as the series progresses. It might look a bit overwhelming but it really is a great read. 🙂
I have most of them on my shelf and the early ones are normal sized but those last few take up a lot of shelf space!
hehe you have not read HP yet? :O Jk.. I think it's a great series to get into
I know….I am so far behind!
Oh no! For shame, Carole!!! I'll be 23 this year (teehee!) and I definitely remember all of the excitement of getting the next Harry Potter book (even though I was so young). Great series!
Happy reading, Carole!
Alyssa @ The Eater of Books!
I remember when everyone was excited about the books being released. I was busy with college, raising a child, and holding down a job so I didn't do a lot of reading when these were released. I will get to them someday.
I actually still haven't read Harry Potter… Of course, I have all the books – I just kind of don't feel like reading them.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Carole!
Lexxie @ (un)Conventional Bookviews
I haven't read them yet either, Lexxie! This is a post to feature the neglected books that I haven't had the chance to read yet. I do hope to finally pick this one up off of my shelf sometime soon!
LOL some are just like that. I've never actually read these either.
There are more bloggers that haven't read Harry Potter than I would have thought. I don't feel so alone 🙂
I read this one and up through book 4 but I was late to the party even then. I really loved this one. There's a lot of humor that didn't make it into the movie that I think really added to the magic of the book.
I feel like I am super late to the party but I will get there someday!
I grew up on this series and love it! I think you should read them. 🙂
Aj @ Read All The Things!
Someday I will get to it. I promise!
I tried to read this series. I got through this book, but DNF book two. I tried the movies and just fell off after the third one. I have no idea why. I love fantasy genre. I wonder if it is the YA. I read some, but not much. I also don't really like YA in a school setting. I don't know why, but I think that is the issue or not. I hope you enjoy this one when you get to it.
Melanie @ Hot Listens & Rabid Reads
I have only seen a couple of the movies. I remember taking my kids to see one of the last movies and just didn't get what all the excitement was about. I feel like I should at least give it a try at some point.
Don't worry, I can believe it! I only read Harry Potter for the first time last year, and even then I only read the first three books and have a lot more of the series to get through. I hope you can get to them soon though and to see if the hype is worth it for yourself 😉
I don't feel so bad then 🙂
