This week’s neglected book

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

Release Date: June 26, 1997
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.

Harry Potter’s life is miserable. His parents are dead and he’s stuck with his heartless relatives, who force him to live in a tiny closet under the stairs. But his fortune changes when he receives a letter that tells him the truth about himself: he’s a wizard. A mysterious visitor rescues him from his relatives and takes him to his new home, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

After a lifetime of bottling up his magical powers, Harry finally feels like a normal kid. But even within the Wizarding community, he is special. He is the boy who lived: the only person to have ever survived a killing curse inflicted by the evil Lord Voldemort, who launched a brutal takeover of the Wizarding world, only to vanish after failing to kill Harry.

Though Harry’s first year at Hogwarts is the best of his life, not everything is perfect. There is a dangerous secret object hidden within the castle walls, and Harry believes it’s his responsibility to prevent it from falling into evil hands. But doing so will bring him into contact with forces more terrifying than he ever could have imagined.

Full of sympathetic characters, wildly imaginative situations, and countless exciting details, the first installment in the series assembles an unforgettable magical world and sets the stage for many high-stakes adventures to come.

Why did I add Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone to my bookshelf?
Can you believe that I haven’t read this one?  Poor Harry Potter has spent a lot of years in my to be read pile.  I don’t know why I haven’t read it.  Both of my daughters have read the series and loved it.  My oldest daughter is 23 now and I know that I have had my print copy since her elementary school days so probably close to 15 years now.  As soon as this series was offered for sale as an ebook, I ran to Pottermore and bought the whole collection.  I have had digital copies of these books for over 6 years.  I don’t know why I haven’t picked them up yet.  Everyone seems to love these books to death and maybe I am a little worried that I won’t like them quite a much.  Hopefully, I will actually read these books at some point.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. I totally love Harry Potter! I saw a bit of the hype close to the release of the 5th book on the news but had little interest in 'kids books'. A friend at work had been nagging me to read it for ages but I refused. Months later I was off sick and joined one of those book club things where you get the introductory offer. I saw the first four HP books in a box set for £2 and bought it. I was a fan after a couple of chapters!

  2. You've never read Harry Potter? I read them all on audio and they are all fantastic, as I'm sure you've heard 🙂 I forgot to grab a book from the physical tbr this morning so I may not be joining in this week but you'll see me again next week 🙂

  3. I think you should leap right in. It's such a fun series and so many people hold it so dear in their hearts.

  4. Insert shocked face here – You haven't read HP!! Here I thought everyone had, even I have…lol. Not obsessed like a lot of people but they were enjoyable.

    • I haven't read them yet either, Lexxie! This is a post to feature the neglected books that I haven't had the chance to read yet. I do hope to finally pick this one up off of my shelf sometime soon!

  5. I read this one and up through book 4 but I was late to the party even then. I really loved this one. There's a lot of humor that didn't make it into the movie that I think really added to the magic of the book.

  6. I tried to read this series. I got through this book, but DNF book two. I tried the movies and just fell off after the third one. I have no idea why. I love fantasy genre. I wonder if it is the YA. I read some, but not much. I also don't really like YA in a school setting. I don't know why, but I think that is the issue or not. I hope you enjoy this one when you get to it.

    • I have only seen a couple of the movies. I remember taking my kids to see one of the last movies and just didn't get what all the excitement was about. I feel like I should at least give it a try at some point.

  7. Don't worry, I can believe it! I only read Harry Potter for the first time last year, and even then I only read the first three books and have a lot more of the series to get through. I hope you can get to them soon though and to see if the hype is worth it for yourself 😉
