This week’s neglected book

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis
Publication Date: September 20, 2016
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

Edgar Award-winning author Mindy McGinnis delivers a riveting contemporary YA novel that examines rape culture through alternating perspectives. A stunning, unforgettable page-turner.

Alex Craft knows how to kill someone. And she doesn’t feel bad about it.

Three
years ago, when her older sister, Anna, was murdered and the killer
walked free, Alex uncaged the language she knows best—the language of
violence. While her own crime goes unpunished, Alex knows she can’t be
trusted among other people. Not with Jack, the star athlete who wants to
really know her but still feels guilty over the role he played the
night Anna’s body was discovered. And not with Peekay, the preacher’s
kid with a defiant streak who befriends Alex while they volunteer at an
animal shelter. Not anyone.

As their senior year unfolds, Alex’s
darker nature breaks out, setting these three teens on a collision
course that will change their lives forever.

Why did I add The Female of the Species to my bookshelf?
This is one of those books that I remember everybody loving several years ago.  Okay, maybe everyone didn’t love it but that is how I remember it so I am going with it.  It is no surprise that I snapped it up like the little book hoarder I am as soon as I saw the ebook marked down to $1.99.  This book has been taking up space on my Kindle since 2017 and now that I am giving it a good look once again, I am really itching to read it.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. It seems like I see nothing but raves for McGinnis. I've never been drawn to her books (on the rare occasion I reach for YA I don't really want anything too dark or serious) but I remember this one being a big hit.

  2. I vaguely remember this book, but can definitely can see the draw. It sounds like a great book–worthwhile and timely. I hope you enjoy when you get to it, Carole!
