In love we find out who we want to be.
In war we find out who we are.FRANCE, 1939
In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says good-bye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn’t believe that the Nazis will invade France…but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne’s home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive.
Vianne’s sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gaëtan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can…completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others.
With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women’s war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.
What are your thoughts? Have you read this book? Would you recommend it to others?
Oh I didn't know about about this one
It was all over the place when it was released but not as much lately.
I really like that "rainy" book cover photo ?
Sounds good, too! ?
It is a great cover!
This was my favorite book of the year when I read it (2015, I think?). And it stayed with me for a long, long time.
That's high praise!
I LOVED The Nightingale. I read that it will be a movie this year. Enjoy!
I had no idea that they were making a movie!
I have this one on my wish list. What a fabulous cover.
I do like the rainy Paris cover!
I have a copy of this one sitting in my TBR pile too. Hopefully we will both love it when we read it.
I do hope so, Wendy!
I say readit
I hope to!
This is one that has attracted me from the get-go, but I still need to read it, too. LOL, looks like you are covered when it comes to editions to choose from.
I completely forgot that I had a copy on my Kindle. It is hard to keep all of these books straight sometimes!
You haven't read this? Carole, I have chills right now just thinking about it. It's painful, but incredible.
It looks like this one might actually be as good as I have heard! I really need to get to it!
sounds intense and i would think it would be awful living with the enemy
sherry @ fundinmental
It would be incredibly hard!
I haven't seen this one before – those who have read it seem to have really enjoyed it though! I'll have to see if I can pick up a copy!

It is a very popular book!
I like the WWI era but don't read very much historical fiction. I tend to want non-fiction about history.
Anne – Books of My Heart
I do really enjoy historical fiction. Non-fiction can be good as well.
I love that this book appealed to you so much that you bought it twice. I rarely read war stories so I probably won't read this one but I hope you enjoy it.
I hate to say that I have bought multiple copies of quite a few books.
