Love, Simon meets Bend It Like Beckham in this feel-good contemporary romance about a trans athlete who must decide between fighting for his right to play and staying stealth.
“A sharply observant and vividly drawn debut. I loved every minute I spent in this story, and I’ve never rooted harder for a jock in my life.” – New York Times bestselling author Becky Albertalli
Fifteen-year-old Spencer Harris is a proud nerd, an awesome big brother, and a David Beckham in training. He's also transgender. After transitioning at his old school leads to a year of isolation and bullying, Spencer gets a fresh start at Oakley, the most liberal private school in Ohio.
At Oakley, Spencer seems to have it all: more accepting classmates, a decent shot at a starting position on the boys' soccer team, great new friends, and maybe even something more than friendship with one of his teammates. The problem is, no one at Oakley knows Spencer is trans—he's passing.
But when a discriminatory law forces Spencer's coach to bench him, Spencer has to make a choice: cheer his team on from the sidelines or publicly fight for his right to play, even though it would mean coming out to everyone—including the guy he's falling for.
Why did I add The Passing Playbook to my bookshelf?
I won this book from the publisher on Instagram just a little bit before it was published. I am slightly embarrassed that it is still sitting on my shelf unread. I thought that this book featuring a transgender athlete would be a perfect book to feature during Pride Month. This one promises to be a worthwhile romance and it is rated pretty highly on Goodreads. It’s not a long book so maybe I can squeeze it in sometime soon.
What are your thoughts? Have you read this book? Would you recommend it?
Ooh nice! That’s a new to me one! I think I may have a book or two that I won that I haven’t read yet. But I honestly can’t think of one off the top of my head! Lol. It happens. Hope you can get to this one soon!
I have so many books sitting on the shelf that I feel terrible for not having read already. Hopefully, you’ll get to this one soon. It’s a perfect pick for the month.
I haven’t heard of this one but I loved Bend it Like Beckham so I’m curious about this one.
thanks for sharing
Why are there never enough hours?! This looks like a great choice for Pride. I hope you find some time to read it.
My book backlog has only ebooks as I gave away almost all my books to make space in the basement for an office and den. And there are too many ebooks to read. Have a good week.
Sounds like the perfect read for Pride month. Hope you love it, Carole.
