One girl murdered...another one missing...and a medical examiner desperate to uncover the truth in When I'm Dead, the latest Black Harbor mystery by acclaimed author Hannah Morrissey.

On a bone-chilling October night, Medical Examiner Rowan Winthorp investigates the death of her daughter’s best friend. Hours later, the tragedy hits even closer to home when she makes a devastating discovery—her daughter, Chloe, is gone. But, not without a trace.

A morbid mosaic of clues forces Rowan and her husband to question how deeply they really knew their daughter. As they work closely to peel back the layers of this case, they begin to unearth disturbing details about Chloe and her secret transgressions...details that threaten to tear them apart.

Amidst the noise of navigating her newfound grief and reconciling the sins of her past, an undeniable fact rings true for Rowan: karma has finally come to collect.

I had a fantastic time reading this book! This is the third book written by Hannah Morrissey that I have read and I am most definitely a fan. This book reads as a stand alone but is listed as the third book in the Black Harbor series. All of the books in the series occur in the same town but contain a separate mystery so I really think that you are okay to read these books in any order that you choose.

In this story, Rowen, the town’s medical examiner, and Axel, a detective, must leave their daughter’s play to investigate the murder of another teen. Their daughter, Chloe, doesn’t make it home after the play and things don’t look good. There is no way to know whether Chloe is dead or only missing but it soon becomes clear that more may be going on than they thought. The story had a lot of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. I really liked that this story is told from several points of view including Rowen, Axel, and Libby who is the teenager that lives next door to the couple.

I listened to the audiobook and thought that the cast of narrators did an amazing job of bringing this story to life. The fact that there is a seperate narrator for each point of view used in the story really helped the flow of the book. I feel like each of the narrators were able to bring out the personalities of the various characters. I am certain that their performances added to my overall enjoyment of this book.

I would recommend this book to others. I found it to be quite the page turner and I loved that the story kept me guessing. I am looking forward to reading more of this author’s work very soon.

I received a digital copy of this book from St. Martin’s Press and Macmillan Audio.

  1. If there are multiple views I do prefer to have multiple narrators do each one unless its a narrator that can flawlessly switch back and forth with various tones in their voices which is more rare.

    Lovely review.

  2. I was just watching a YouTube video where someone picked up this book so I was so glad to see this review! This looks like one that would keep me up reading!
