This week’s neglected book

Night Film by Marisha Pessl
Publication Date: August 20, 2013
Publisher: Random House

On a damp October night,
24-year-old Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in
lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran
investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes
the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath
comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary,
reclusive cult-horror film director Stanislaus Cordova–a man who hasn’t
been seen in public for more than thirty years.

For McGrath,
another death connected to this seemingly cursed family dynasty seems
more than just a coincidence. Though much has been written about
Cordova’s dark and unsettling films, very little is known about the man
himself.

Driven by revenge, curiosity, and a need for the truth,
McGrath, with the aid of two strangers, is drawn deeper and deeper into
Cordova’s eerie, hypnotic world. The last time he got close to exposing
the director, McGrath lost his marriage and his career. This time he
might lose even more.

Why did I add Night Film to my bookshelf?
I have had this book on my shelf for several years.  It sounds like something that I would enjoy.  It looks like most of my Goodreads friends really liked this one but there is a handful that didn’t care for it much at all.  I remember picking this book up at a used book sale and I am crossing my fingers that it meets my expectations.

A Quick Update

We have been so busy!  My husband and I both took vacation time to get us moved and to get our old house ready to sell.  We are feeling pretty settled at the new house and the dogs are feeling more at home (they were not a fan of this whole moving idea).  Our old house is now vacant waiting for flooring and paint.  My husband and I have been putting in 14 hour days most days and both of my daughters have done a lot.  I have fallen out of a truck, had a dresser thrown at me, and various bumps and bruises from all of our work.  We did get some help from friends and family which helped a lot.  In the time since I last posted, I have painted, carried heavy furniture, ripped up carpeting, tore out some drywall, and sorted through more boxes that I want to think about.  I can’t remember the last time I picked up a book or listened to an audiobook but I am itching to get back into the swing of things so hopefully, I will get a couple of posts up next week.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. Hope things settle down for you soon. Sounds like you're getting there. I have this book on my shelves as well and have never picked it up. Falling out of a truck huh? Sounds painful.

  2. Eek, the fun side of moving house! I'd like to lift my house, drive it about 400 miles to England, add a big extension, underground bunker, loft and conservatory! That would be perfect! I'm glad all of you are starting to get settled now.

  3. glad the move is going so well and the critters are adjusting. funny how we get bumps and bruises we never know about until we actually look for them. no serious injuries is a good thing -:)

  4. I would read this one for sure.

Congratulations on the move. I know it can be tough. At least you weren't juggling the sale of your current home and the new home at the same time. I'm glad the dogs are settling in. Try to make sure you remember to relax for a few minutes.

  5. I think this was a book that caught my attention, but I never got around to picking it up. Hope you enjoy it when you get the chance.

Whew, you're getting a lot done and glad you had some help.

  6. I've had this book on my list to read for a while too. I don't envy you in all the work it takes to move, but I know how exciting it is to get into the new space! We moved to our house back in March, and I feel like we are still have so much work to do haha.

  7. You're going to need a vacation after the vacation. But seriously, congratulations on the new house. Sounds like you are well on your way to making it home.

  8. Holy cow you have been busy! Glad to hear you're all moved into your new place though. Good luck with everything you have to do yet, and hope you get some reading in soon! 🙂
