This week’s neglected book
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke
Publication Date: September 8, 2004
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA
In the Hugo-award winning, epic New York Times Bestseller and basis for the BBC miniseries, two men change England’s history when they bring magic back into the world.
In
the midst of the Napoleonic Wars in 1806, most people believe magic to
have long since disappeared from England – until the reclusive Mr.
Norrell reveals his powers and becomes an overnight celebrity.
Another
practicing magician then emerges: the young and daring Jonathan
Strange. He becomes Norrell’s pupil, and the two join forces in the war
against France.
But Strange is increasingly drawn to the wild,
most perilous forms of magic, and he soon risks sacrificing his
partnership with Norrell and everything else he holds dear.
Susanna
Clarke’s brilliant first novel is an utterly compelling epic tale of
nineteenth-century England and the two magicians who, first as teacher
and pupil and then as rivals, emerge to change its history.
Why did I add Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell to my bookshelf?
I used to have a print copy of this book but donated it once I picked up a digital copy to read on my Kindle. It is a rather large book at over 800 pages so I knew that I would enjoy reading it more on my Kindle. I really cannot believe that I have given this one a try yet since I know that I have had the book around in one form or another for well over 10 years. It looks like most of my Goodreads friends really enjoyed it although a few were not impressed. It should be worth a try.
What are your thoughts? Have you read this book? Would you recommend it to others?

What an atmospheric cover! And fall seems like the perfect time for that kind of story. And I would definitely go the Kindle route for an 800-page book. LOL
I love the cover of your book! I hope you love it.
I forever shy away from long books. It's probably good you have it electronically, because you can't see how big it is. LOL
i don't read a lot of loooong books any more, so they have to be ones i have been anticipating before i will pick it up. hope you enjoy it when you decide to hunker down with it

If there are a lot of foreign names to pronounce, plus a long book, I usually prefer it on audio. I don't struggle subconsciously with trying to figure out pronunciations.

Oh I don't know about this one
Whew, 800 pages would be heavy. I love that about e-books, too. I've seen it around, but not read it.
Oh you have to read it
A book over 800 pages would intimidate me, but on a Kindle, it wouldn't be so evident how long it is. It sounds pretty good to me.
I enjoyed this one quite a bit, although not as much as my husband. It's one of his all-time favorites. I hope you enjoy it if you do decide to read it, Carole!
I kind of want my huge books physical which seems weird since it means I only get to read it at home. hahaha. but then again, I'm not the huge book type of reader.
Hope you enjoy this when you get to it, Carole!
800 pages is a big book.
This one has always caught my attention but that page count always scares me away!
