I am really excited to participate in The Sunday Post hosted by Caffeinated Reviewer and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Reading Reality.

My Life

My first week of being an empty nester was a quiet one. My daughter has sent me some photos of her new apartment and it looks like she is settling in. My daughter has gone away to school before and has completed her Bachelor’s degree. She will be pursuing a Masters and Ph.D. at Ohio State but this move is different than just going away to school because she won’t be back. Chances are that she will move even further away once she is done with school in 5 years.

I had a pretty quiet week at work. In fact, I was alone in the office on both Thursday and Friday which was kind of nice. I am really looking forward to having Tuesday off next week even though I am dreading the fireworks. My dogs are afraid of fireworks so it ends up being rather stressful.

How was your week?

What I’m Reading

I read 6 books this week. I thought that Rogue by Elle Kennedy was very well done and I flew through it. I was hooked almost immediately by Finders Keepers by Stephen King. Play to Win by Jodie Slaughter was a fun second-chance romance after a huge lottery win. I had a great time with Someone Just Like You by Meredith Schorr. I couldn’t wait to dive into I Did It For You by Amy Engel and I was not disappointed. Those We Thought We Knew by David Joy proved once again just how talented this author is. If you haven’t tried David Joy’s work, please do yourself a favor and add his name to the top of your tbr list.

I have read about 20% of Star Bringer by Tracy Wolff and Nina Croft. This is a longer book at just over 600 pages so it might take me a bit to get through it but it has been a ton of fun so far. I have listened to around a third of Ebony Gate by Julia Vee and Ken Bebelle and am loving it so far.

Books Added

Star Bringer by Tracy Wolff & Nina Croft (Publisher); The Valkyrie’s Shadow by Tiana Warner (Publisher); A Curse of Krakens by Kevin Hearne (Publisher)

  1. Ok adding those we thoght we new! Also my daughter got her bachelor degree and will begin her master in a few months!

  2. ((HUGS)) Carole. It’s terrible when our kids leave. Mine has been gone, more or less, since high school graduation (10 years), getting further and further away each time. I hope the pups do ok on the 4th.

  3. Yeah , I hate when the holiday lands in the middle of the week like it does this week. Really, it should only ever fall on Fridays and Mondays! Make it a nice long weekend! Lol! I’m in a constant state of agony myself since our power is out and has been since Friday. Darn storm and Ameren doesn’t have an ETA for restoration, so it’s not looking good!

Nice new reads! I haven’t read this series by Hearne, I still need to finish his first one! And I keep debating about Wolff’s newest one! Can’t wait for your thoughts on it! Hope you enjoy the new reads!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

  4. Nice to have the office to yourself. Glad your daughters first few days away are going well. Wow, six this week!

Have a good 4th week, Carole!

  5. My dog is a little scared of fireworks too. So I won’t be going out to look in any of them around here, I’ll be staying inside with the dog and making sure he doesn’t get too upset.

  6. Well it sounds nice to have time to yourself. You can then enjoy even more the family time. I wish you a happy 4th holiday and more great reading. We just stay home and if Lulu is with us she’s ok.

  7. Empty nesting is tough. best of luck to your daughter! And the fireworks- yeah. They’ve been shooting them off here for days and the cats get scared.

  8. I have been curious about those Elle Kennedy! I really need to get back to reading her. Normally when kids go to college that is further away from home, they stay away lol My sister and her husband was like that. At first they just went to school in Chicago, but then settled in Kansas. Not close to Utah thats for sure haha But sometimes its a good thing to see them craft their own life even while you miss them.

  9. It’s so hard when they move far away. My daughter just moved back locally and my son moved back in to save some $ for a house but when they were states away it was so hard. ♥

They started with the fireworks here on Friday. My poor furry children are not happy (and me neither, for that matter)

  10. I am glad to hear your daughter is settling in well. I wish her the best with her studies! I like it when I have the office to myself too (or at least mostly because it’s never quite empty)–it’s so quiet. Even quieter than home sometimes. I am glad you have tomorrow off. I’m working all week, including tomorrow, unfortunately. I am hoping it will be quiet, but I am not sure I will get my wish given all the emergencies that come up when you mix alcohol, pool/lake parties, and illegal fireworks.

Star Bringer and Ebony Gate both sound so good! I am glad you are enjoying them. I hope you have a great week, Carole!

  11. I guess you’ve had a trial run at being an empty nester, but now it’s the real deal. I was okay with it since my oldest didn’t move out until he was 26, as he was going to school nearby. A quiet week is wonderful. Hope they don’t go crazy with the fireworks for your dog’s sake! They usually don’t do them by me because there’s such a high risk for a forest fire. No one wants their house to burn down.

  12. So glad to hear your daughter is settling in nicely and that you are adjusting to empty nester status! I hope the fireworks weren’t too bad in your area. I have a friend who was able to train her dog to not be afraid of fireworks and I’ve been wanting to pick her brain on the process. If I learn any tips I’ll be glad to share! I hope you’ve had a great week!
