Grim Reaper Charley Davidson is back in the ninth installment of Darynda Jones' New York Times bestselling paranormal series, The Dirt on Ninth Grave

In a small village in New York lives Jane Doe, a girl with no memory of who she is or where she came from. So when she is working at a diner and slowly begins to realize she can see dead people, she's more than a little taken aback. Stranger still are the people entering her life. They seem to know things about her. Things they hide with lies and half-truths. Soon, she senses something far darker. A force that wants to cause her harm, she is sure of it. Her saving grace comes in the form of a new friend she feels she can confide in and the fry cook, a devastatingly handsome man whose smile is breathtaking and touch is scalding. He stays close, and she almost feels safe with him around.

But no one can outrun their past, and the more lies that swirl around her-even from her new and trusted friends-the more disoriented she becomes, until she is confronted by a man who claims to have been sent to kill her. Sent by the darkest force in the universe. A force that absolutely will not stop until she is dead. Thankfully, she has a Rottweiler. But that doesn't help in her quest to find her identity and recover what she's lost. That will take all her courage and a touch of the power she feels flowing like electricity through her veins. She almost feels sorry for him. The devil in blue jeans. The disarming fry cook who lies with every breath he takes. She will get to the bottom of what he knows if it kills her. Or him. Either way.

I enjoyed this one! You will definitely want to read the eighth book in the series before jumping into this one since it picks up right where the previous book left off. Charley has lost her memory and lives as a Jane Doe in New York while working in a diner as a waitress. Cookie, Reyes, and the whole gang have followed her but she doesn’t recognize them even though she quickly becomes close to Cookie and has eyes for Reyes. Charley is still Charley though and ends up getting involved in a situation that is putting someone she knows in danger.

I loved how patient everyone was with Charley and it is obvious just how much they all care for her. I felt bad for Reyes since Charley didn’t remember him at first. I hate that Charley has had to deal with so much pain that she has lost herself but it was great to see her make her way back to the people that love her. The mystery was very well done and there was more than enough humor to go around.

I listened to the audiobook and thought that Lorelei King did a phenomenal job with the narration. I honestly couldn’t imagine experiencing this series in any other way after listening to the audiobook. I love the voices that she uses for this cast of characters and I think that she is able to add to the humor of the story. I am certain that her narration added to my enjoyment and I do recommend this series to others.

If one door closes and another one opens,
your house is probably haunted.

As a Part-time PI and fulltime grim reaper, Charley Davidson has asked a lot of questions throughout her life: Why can I see dead people? Who is the hot supernatural entity following me? How do I get gum out of my sister’s hair before she wakes up? But, “How do I trap not one malevolent god, but three?” was never among them. Until now. And since those gods are on earth to kill her daughter, she has little choice but to track them down, trap them, and cast them from this dimension.

There’s just one problem. One of the three stole her heart a very long time ago. Can the Razer, a god of absolute death and destruction, change his omniscient spots, or will his allegiances lie with his brothers?

Those are just a few of the questions Charley must answer, and quick. Add to that a homeless girl running for her life, an innocent man who’s been charged with murdering the daughter of a degenerate gambler, and a pendant made from god glass that has the entire supernatural world in an uproar, and Charley has her hands full. If she can manage to take care of the whole world-destroying-gods thing, we’re saved. If not, well...

This was another great installment! Charley has her plate full once again and I had a great time watching her work things out. She knows something about her spouse that may change things, plus there is a teenage girl who needs her help, not to mention the person who has been charged with murder. Charley never seems to have a boring day, does she?

This installment had all of the action and humor that I have come to expect from the series. There were some revelations at the end that left me very eager to pick up the next installment. I feel like the series is building toward something big and I cannot wait to see what it may be. I found this installment to be very exciting and I had a very hard time setting the book aside.

I listened to the audiobook and Lorelei King did a wonderful job with the story once again. I love how consistent she has been through the series. She adds just the right amount of emotion to her reading and I love the way that she brings out the humor of the story. I am positive that her narration added a lot to my enjoyment of this wonderful story. I cannot wait to listen to the next book!

Grim Reaper Charley Davidson is back in Eleventh Grave in Moonlight, the latest installment of Darynda Jones’ New York Times bestselling paranormal series.

My entire life can be summed up in one sentence:

“Well, that didn’t go as planned.”

A typical day in the life of Charley Davidson involves cheating husbands, errant wives, missing people, philandering business owners, and, oh yeah...demons, hell hounds, evil gods, and dead people. Lots and lots of dead people. As a part time Private Investigator and full-time Grim Reaper, Charley has to balance the good, the bad, the undead, and those who want her dead.

Now, Charley is learning to make peace with the fact that she is a goddess with all kinds of power and that her own daughter has been born to save the world from total destruction. But the forces of hell are determined to see Charley banished forever to the darkest corners of another dimension. With the son of Satan himself as her husband and world-rocking lover, will Charley be able to defeat the ultimate evil and find a way to have her happily ever after after all?

This was a wonderful addition to a series that is quickly becoming a favorite! Charley never seems to catch a break. She is looking into the Fosters, who have ties to her husband. Reyes asks her not to take the case but Charley wants to help. Of course, the case ends up being much more complicated than they ever imagined. Plus, Charley and Reyes are worried about Beep. I cannot wait to see them reunited!

As the series draws closer to the end, I really feel like things are ramping up. Charley and Reyes have so much at stake but they make a great team. This book had all the action, humor, and romance that I have come to expect from the series. I found it almost impossible to set this book aside because I just had to know what would happen next.

Lorelei King does an amazing job with this series. I just adore the voices that she uses to bring this wonderful cast of characters to life. She adds just enough emotion to her reading to take the story to the next level. I couldn’t imagine experiencing these books in any other way. This is definitely a series that should not be missed. I cannot wait to tackle the next installment!

  1. I’ve only read the first two books in this series, but I thought they were fun. Charley’s such a great character.

  2. Oh my goodness. It’s been ages since I read these books. I know that overall, I liked the series a lot, and there are some stand out books. But I also recall several books having problems (for me). Glad you are enjoying. If you haven’t already tried them, I HIGHLY recommend her Sunshine Vicram series (suspense mystery and same wicked humor).

  3. I really need to read more of this series. Lorelei King is such a great narrator and I’ve really enjoyed the other books by this author that I’ve read.
