DON'T LOOK BACK

Under siege. That's how Ryker Jones feels. The Lost Bastards Investigative Agency he opened up with his blood brothers has lost a client in a brutal way. The past he can't outrun is resurfacing, threatening to drag him down in the undertow. And the beautiful woman he's been trying to keep at arm's length is in danger...and he'll destroy anything and anyone to keep her safe.

Paralegal Zara Remington is in over her head. She's making risky moves at work by day and indulging in an affair with a darkly dangerous PI by night. There's a lot Ryker isn't telling her and the more she uncovers, the less she wants to know. But when all hell breaks loose, Ryker may be the only one to save her. If his past doesn't catch up to them first...

Full of twists and turns you won't see coming, Deadly Silence is New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti at her suspenseful best. Fans of New York Times bestsellers Maya Banks, Lisa Gardner, and Lisa Jackson will love Deadly Silence.

Audiobook Re-Read – Quick Thoughts

I liked this book more the second time around. Now that I have read the Sin Brothers series a lot of things in this book just made more sense. Just having that background information added a lot to my enjoyment of the story. I remembered very little of the book from the first time I read it so I enjoyed getting to know Ryker, Zara, and the rest of the characters in this book. The appearance of the characters from the Sin Brothers series at the end of the book was a nice bonus for me. Karen White narrated the audiobook and I thought that she did a wonderful job with it. She does a great job with all of the character voices and was able to add just the right amount of excitement and emotion to the story. I am really looking forward to diving into the next book in this trilogy very soon!

Original Review

I liked this book.  I do have to admit that it took me a while to really get hooked by the story but once I was I really enjoyed it.  I jumped at the chance to read this book since it is the start of a new series by an author that I have wanted to read for a long time.  The story had a lot of great elements added to the appeal of the book.

I think that the main reason that I had some trouble getting into the story was that I just couldn’t totally wrap my head around Ryker’s behavior.  I love an alpha male Hero as much as the next girl but he was a bit over the top.  I really couldn’t figure out why Zara would want to put up with him.  As the book progressed and Ryker and Zara spent more time together their actions toward each other started to make more sense to me.  In the end, I do think that their relationship worked very well.

Ryker was a great character.  He has had a difficult past and has dedicated himself to finding the lost along with his two blood brothers.  He has some special abilities which make him very good at what he does.  It has always just been him and his brothers with no other connections.  He has been seeing Zara very casually.  When he sees that she may be in trouble, he becomes very protective and realizes that maybe it wasn’t really so casual after all.

Zara has also been through a lot as well.  She has built a life that she is proud of working as a paralegal.  She also tries very hard to help others and has sacrificed a lot to assist an old friend.  She knows that things between her and Ryker have no chance of becoming anything more than physical so she takes what she can get.  When she finds herself in trouble, she accepts Ryker’s help but also makes a few brave moves herself.

I would recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance.  This new series is a spin-off of the Sin Brothers series, which I still need to read.  If you haven’t read the earlier series, this is a great starting point since everything is explained very well.  I can’t wait to read the next Blood Brothers book!

I received a digital review copy of this book from Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and I purchased a copy of the audiobook.

  3. I’ve been seeing Rebecca Zanetti’s name everywhere lately and it feels like a sign that I must read her! I love rereading a book through audio – especially if there is suspense involved.
